Diamond Moon Page 48

Mara helped usher him out of the darkened gallery room and back into the bright lobby. “It’s all a bit overwhelming? Is that all you are trying to say?” she asked.

Hanson stalled in the lobby for a moment. “I’m happy about it…” he said. “I think I could spend the rest of my life like this. Here, with you.” She noticed that he was blushing a little bit.

“You don’t want to take the rig out for another run then? After we get some good time in with your brother on the beach? Go chase your next big score?” she said with a wide smile on her face.

“Maybe someday,” he said as he stopped again, taking his time.

Mara watched as Hanson stood under tall glass windows within the lobby space. Warm light was pouring in from the cool, crisp day outside. He made little effort to continue their conversation or to leave the comfort of that spot.

She waited patiently. He stood with the sun on his face, eyes closed, and she could see him enjoying the rays of light touching his skin. She tugged on his arm, still wrapped around hers, just enough to get his attention. He opened his eyes and took a deep breath.

Hanson looked down at their intertwined arms, and their interlocked fingers. He looked carefully at his arm that had been disfigured. It was nearly completely healed, and the muscles were nearly whole again. He looked outside at the crowd and the trees and the clouds.

“I feel like we have a lot of time to think about it,” he finally said. “And I don’t want to waste a single day.”

Mara heard him say those words, and they reminded her of something Dr. Aman had said to her once. She still noticed the changes. She still felt them. She didn’t want to say anything to Hanson quite yet, but she had a strong suspicion.

“A lot of time, huh?” she repeated. “Me too,” she said. “I say we take all the time we want… And I think we’ll have a long, long time to decide.”
