Lena was beautiful and sexy and held all those qualities that I used to be jealous of, but not anymore.
That part of me had died. The jealous part of me that had caused me to have doubts and have an inferiority complex was gone, replaced by a love for my fiancé. Being with Jordan had brought me to the realization that no matter what, you couldn’t control how others treated you or force others to love you. They simply did, or they didn’t. What I could control was how I reacted to situations.
And not once did I doubt Jordan or how he felt about me because, each and every day, he made me feel loved. It was in the sweetness of his cards, the tenderness of his kisses, and the crassness of his texts.
As time passed slowly, and even though we were miles apart at times, we made an effort to make it work.
Our wedding was in a few weeks. Jordan was a hands-on planner, and with both cooks in the kitchen, you would think it would have been hard to agree on the details, but it wasn’t.
We were truly alike in more ways than I could count.
We’d agreed on every little detail from the colors of the wedding to the flavor of the cake to the decor and flowers. We’d high-fived at every decision made.
I loved him truly, madly, eternally.
Hours later, the sound of the waves, the warm heat of the sun, and the gentle breeze of the Hawaii air lulled me to sleep. I awoke to someone kissing me. On my forehead, on my cheeks, on my lips.
“Sleeping Beauty.” More kisses. “Wake up, Sexy Beauty.”
It was my prince.
The butterflies in my stomach took flight and my heart beat hammered in my chest at the sight of him.
“Ready to go?” His smile was blinding, and seeing him sitting with the Hawaii sun setting in front of us made me feel like I was in a dream.
I peered up, and the film crew on the horizon was gone. I wondered how long I’d been asleep.
“We’ve got things to do—invitations to pick, a wedding to plan.” He took my hands within his, kissing my knuckles and I openly sighed.
“Wedding to plan,” I said, meeting his eyes.
A breath escaped me, and I smiled lovingly up at him. My fingers touched his bare chest, tracing my initials etched in ink above his heart, right by a bird, free and flying. He’d gotten it on Candice’s and his father’s death anniversary. The brothers got a tattoo every year to celebrate their life.
Our pasts, our happiness, our hardships shaped who we were. We learned from others, and our pains shaped us to make better decisions today.
Her name was etched on his chest, right next to mine, but I was fine with that because, without her, I wouldn’t have the same Jordan today. The Jordan who wanted to live every moment to its fullest, never knowing when the next moment would be our last.
His knuckles brushed at my cheek. “Cold feet?”
“No.” I squinted at the sun setting in front of us. “It’s just so crazy. So fast.” I hadn’t meant to let those words slip out; I’d meant to say them in my head.
He nodded, agreeing but still smiling, nonetheless.
“We were engaged in a month.” He pressed his pointer finger to my nose. “Will be married within eight.” He leaned in and peered up at me with a secret question. “Baby in twenty-four?”
I breathed in and widened my eyes. Baby? This guy is going super-fast. I wasn’t thinking of babies. “Too fast,” I whispered, feeling my pulse tick up in speed.
But then he cupped my face and kissed me breathless. I inhaled his new signature cologne, which I’d bought, and felt his large palm against the softness of my cheek, and all my worries disappeared.
Whatever happened, whatever the future held, I knew we would be more than okay.
“Crazy fast. But I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said, muffled against my lips.
Crazy, madly, deeply, perfectly. That was how our relationship could be summed up.
“Thirty-six months,” I whispered, extending his timeline.
With Jordan, all my plans always flew out the door.
Who knew? It might be sooner than that.
