“Oh thank go—” her words were cut off by her falling suddenly.
I started back to help her, when I saw one of the things landing on her back, forcing what air was left out of her. I had to think, brute force hadn't done Bill any good, how to get it off her. Wait! The crowbars!
I scrambled through the entrance, and flailed about wildly until my hand found its goal. Ducking back in my light flashed down. What was illuminated was Melissa's beautiful face pleading up at me as the monster upon her was intent on tearing through her coveralls. Ten feet below me, I had no time at all to work my way back. I'd have to risk it on a throw at the things ugly brutish head.
I drew back my arm as far as I could in the cramped position I was in. Just then, the thing looked up at me and let out an ear piercing shriek, almost a challenge at me! Its teeth bared in hatred and defiance. I threw the crowbar with every ounce of my strength at its hideous visage.
At the last second, when it seemed sure that it would hit it, and wound it enough at least, its taloned wing snaked out flicking the crowbar out of the air. Down. Directly down into Melissa's head. My only achievement had been to decrease her knowledge of her own death by seconds as the crow bar slammed in to her head with a sickening thump!
Instincts took the place of thought for me now. I lunged back up out of this hole up to the tunnel above scrambling frantically through the gap we left. I flung myself to the side and with a strength born of terror shoved on the slab!
As it was almost sealed again, the end of a talon stuck itself out. Grabbing one of the other crowbars, I beat on the thing viciously over and over. Finally there was a loud cracking noise, and yet another of their high pitched dreadful screams and the talon disappeared back in to the depths. I dropped the crowbar and shoved the slab the last few inches back in place.
There were a few thumps at the slabs underside it seemed, some muffled squeals of animal rage. And then finally, blessed silence.
How long I've sat here in the dark I don't know. Soon after I slammed the lid on the things I turned my light off. I figured that they might be attracted to light. I don't know if any of the things might have slipped out while we were down there.
I'm going to have to turn on my light and get moving soon though. You can't hide in the sewers forever.
For all I know, one of the monsters is even now on the surface for the first time in half a millennia, wreaking havoc above. For all I know one of them, could also be down here somewhere.
Waiting for me.
