Second Sight: An Away From Keyboard Romantic Suspense Standalone Page 25

“Dax, how hard did they hit you?” He sounds genuinely concerned now, his voice strained.

“There’s nothing wrong with my head, fucker. I know it wasn’t actually your voice. I’m trying to thank you. To tell you…” I clear my throat, trying to find the words through the weight of the emotions pressing down on my chest. “You saved me. You saved Evianna. And she’s…she’s everything to me. You don’t have to worry about me anymore, brother.”

Ryker doesn’t speak for almost a minute. When he does, there’s a thickness, an awkwardness to his tone that tells me he’s as close to tears as I am. “I’ll always worry, Dax. That’s what brothers do.”

“I love you, man. And…your whole New Year’s wedding plans? Any chance you’d want to make it a double?”

“Fuckin’ A, brother! You’ve got yourself a deal.”

  Hello,

Thank you for reading Second Sight. When I started writing this book, I wasn’t sure I could do Dax justice.

After all, he’s blind. And—at least when I wear my contacts—I can see. To write Dax’s story, I talked to a number of people with limited amounts of sight.

Whenever I write, I try to put myself in the characters’ shoes. But Dax…his shoes were very hard to put on.

In some ways…Dax and Ryker are two halves of one whole. Brothers in every way that counts, each of them almost…can’t exist without the other. In some ways, this is as much their book as it was Dax’s and Evianna’s.

Bringing them back together was so rewarding. And yes, that wedding will be in a future book.

In On His Six, I told you that I write characters I call “beautifully broken.”

Dax is definitely broken. He’s blind, angry, and alone. But with Evianna, he finds a way to feel…whole.

Dax still has a bit of a journey to go on. But now that he’s reconciled with Ryker and has Evianna at his side, he’ll take that journey. And he won’t be alone.

I want the Away From Keyboard series to continue on for many, many books. Ford’s story is next. After that, there’s a surprise story. But Trevor, Clive, Graham, and Ella will all get their own books soon.

I hope you’ll come along for the ride. See the Also by section for a list of the other books I have available or visit my website: http://patriciadeddy.com. I love talking to readers, so email me at [email protected].

  THE END

  About the Author

I’ve always made up stories. Sometimes I even acted them out. I probably shouldn’t admit that my childhood best friend and I used to run around the backyard pretending to fly in our Invisible Jet and rescue Steve Trevor. Oops.

Now that I’m too old to spin around in circles with felt magic bracelets on my wrists, I put “pen to paper” instead. Figuratively, at least. Fingers to keyboard is more accurate.

Outside of my writing, I’m a professional editor, a software geek, a singer (in the shower only), and a runner. I love red wine, scotch (neat, please), and cider. Seattle is my home, and I share an old house with my husband and cats.

I’m on my fourth—fifth?—rewatching of the modern Doctor Who, and I think one particular quote from that show sums up my entire life.

“We’re all stories, in the end. Make it a good one, eh?” — The Eleventh Doctor, Doctor Who

I hope your story is brilliant.
