Prince Barrak of Terra is sent to negotiate for peace with the Zytellians, an aggressive, matriarchal species which has conquered much of the known galaxy. Tiryl, the leader of the Zytellians, refuses to negotiate with a male, and she makes Barrak her prisoner instead. She intends to teach him his proper place in her society-as a subordinate whose only purpose is to please women. She uses every method at her disposal to "retrain" him.
