  I returned his stare unflinchingly. I’d already put all my cards on the table. The damage was done. Tears were coming from the rejection, but I didn’t want him to see them.

  “Well, I guess I’ll go,” I said eventually. “Sorry to bother you.”

  I stood up to go, but found my hand held tightly in his grasp. He had my heart, too, although he didn’t know it.
