In that rare experience when one recognizes she’s been blessed, Victoria closed her eyes and savored the moment. Then her joyful screech echoed through the trees of Valley Green. Her dream of a recording career was finally coming true.

“But baby, the picture’s not complete.”

  Victoria looked at him questioningly.

“We can’t go all the way to California and not stop by and see your mom.”

Victoria was quiet for a moment. “You’re right, Kareem. When we get there, I’m going to drive to Pasadena to have a talk with her—alone. I have to tell my mother that I love her, and that with the help of therapy I’m able to understand how hard it was for her to accept an unwanted pregnancy at sixteen. She wasn’t ready for me, and I forgive her. If she can handle that, and if she wants to be a part of my life—of our lives, then I’d be honored to introduce you to your future mother-in-law, Kareem.”

“Whatever way it goes, baby, you still got me. I’m in for the long haul. You feel me?”

  “I feel you.”

Kareem put his arm around her, and pulled her close as they made their way together down the long winding path.
