Amish Christmas Bride

She took the kitten along, back into the bedroom. While they were eating, the kitten woke up when he smelled the ham. Jane broke off little pieces to feed him.

“Now we have a complete family, almost,” Jane said.

“Whether we have many kinner, or only one or two, I’m fine with whatever Gott has for us. All I wanted I now have in you, Jane. Kinner will be a bonus.”

Jane was pleased to hear that. So many of her youthful years were now behind her. She looked out the window at the dark sky. “I think it might snow today.”

“I hope it does. I’d love to have a white Christmas.”

She looked at him. “You said you wanted to be married by Christmas, and you are.”

“That’s what I said, but I didn’t tell you who I wanted to be married to.”

“I’m so pleased it was me.”

“You’ve always been the only one I could ever see myself with. I only wish I’d told you sooner,” he said.

“We can’t live our lives with regret.”

“You’re right. All we can do is appreciate each other more fully now, and be grateful that we’re together.”

“I can scarcely believe Silas and Becky and their families are stopping by Sadie’s after our Christmas dinner. We’re all one big happy family now, as much as we can be.” Jane giggled.

  “What’s so funny?”

“I can remember when you told me why you wanted me to come here. Your letter had sounded so urgent. At first, I thought you might propose, but then when you told me the real reason, I was so shocked.”

He shook his head. “I should’ve proposed right then and there.”

  “You should’ve. I would’ve said yes.”

  “I’m a fool.”

“Jah, you were once, but not anymore.” She looked down at the kitten. “I will call him Sunshine. From now on all my days will be filled with sunshine and happiness. When I look at him, I’ll remember how blessed I am. Gott saw my unhappiness and He answered my prayers.”

  “And mine.”

He leaned forward and they kissed. When they moved apart, they saw the kitten had seized the moment. He was eating the remaining bits of ham like he hadn’t been fed for weeks.

  They both laughed.

  “Happy Christmas, Mrs. Yoder.”

“Happy Christmas to you, too, Mr. Yoder.”

In the years following their marriage, Jane and Matt went through many changes. They were blessed with three children, all boys, the youngest of whom had his mother’s red hair and green eyes. The older two were the image of their father, echoing Matt’s chocolate brown eyes and dark hair.

Sadie came to live with them and helped with the children and with the cooking at the bed and breakfast. Reports of Sadie’s meals went far and wide, attracting many visitors to stay.

For Jane, life couldn’t have been better, made even more special now that she kept in regular contact with her brother and sister and their families. Each Christmas they gathered together to celebrate, and for Jane and Matt Christmas would always be ‘their’ special time when they counted their blessings, giving extra thanks to God for bringing them together—in spite of themselves.
