Chapter 1
Jeremy Norton
Pouring my second cup of coffee for the day, I look around at the empire I created with my brother, Ethan. As a veterinarian, I wanted to do more with my canine specialty. I've always had a way with animals, dogs especially. My childhood dog, Everest, was a bit of a handful. He was an Irish Setter who passed away a few years ago. When I was ten, I went to the library and checked out a book on dog training and the rest is history. I, along with Ethan, have designed a two-tiered program. On one end of the spectrum, I train family pet’s for everyday obedience. The other end is specialized service dog training. It’s early. Our secretary, Jill, is not in yet. She just got back from maternity leave and asked if she could come in later now. We agreed, of course. Her husband, Terry is our oldest friend, but even if he wasn’t, we are not dicks. The phone is ringing off the hook. I don’t think I have ever heard it ring this early. It’s only seven-thirty.
“Top Dog,” I say answering it, my voice harsher than I mean it to be. There is no reason for this other than I hate talking on the phone.
“Hi. Is...” The woman pauses, taking a deep breath. “Is this the service dog training place on Hamilton?” Her soft yet sultry voice is hesitant.
“It is. How can I help you?” My tone immediately changes. Somehow, I just know she needs a soothing voice.
“Oh, good. I have a nine-week-old Labrador Retriever. I’d like to have him trained.” I grab a pen out of Jill’s cup holder and look in the appointment book.
“No problem. What kind of training did you have in mind?”
“I need him to be my therapy dog.” Ah, makes sense now. Even on the phone, I can tell she is hesitant and timid.
“Alright. I have an opening later this afternoon. Do you want to bring the dog in?”
“Uh, sure. What time?”
“One,” I say.
“Perfect.”
“Your name?”
“Ethel Mason.”
“Alright, Ms. Mason. The dog’s name?”
“You are going to laugh,” she says quietly.
“I promise, I’ve heard it all ma’am.” I have been out of school and residency for three years now. I see animals on a veterinary basis as well, but this is the bulk of my work.
“Okay. His name is The Tenth Doctor. Ten for short.”
“That’s a fine name.” She laughs and it goes straight to my balls. Shit. With a name like Ethel, she’s probably eighty years old and widowed. Despite her excellent taste in British TV shows, she is a potential client. That is rule number one for Ethan and me. We don’t fuck with clients. Everyone knows mixing business and pleasure is a disaster waiting to happen. What the hell is wrong with me? I pencil her and Ten in the calendar, shake my head, and get back to work.
After a lunch meeting with a kennel club who wants to partner up with Top Dog, I have a few minutes before Ethel gets here. Why am I so excited about meeting her? There is something about the timidness in her voice that intrigues me. It’s like she is timid, but I can be the one that breaks her out of it. I have never thought this long or hard about a woman before. At thirty, I have been so busy with school and then getting Top Dog off the ground, I haven’t made time for women in any capacity. That has to be why I am so intrigued by this woman. The more I think about it, I know that isn't true. It has to be more than that. Her voice is sultry and angelic at the same time. I literally can't stop thinking about her.
I look again at my watch and realize that it’s one-twenty and she’s twenty minutes late. I am more anxious than I ever have been, and I don’t like it.
For some reason, I decide to go outside, and I see that there is one car in the parking lot besides mine and I instinctively know that it’s her. She is white knuckling her steering wheel and my heart goes out to her. The closer I get, the more I can see her beautiful, tear-streaked face. She is breathtaking.
I walk over to her car and lightly tap on the window. It takes her a second to snap out of her daze. She hits the button and the window rolls down automatically.
“Hi, Ethel?” I question and she nods. “You okay? Have you been out here long?” She just nods and Ten whines from the backseat. “Alright. One step at a time then. I’m Jeremy. We spoke on the phone earlier. Do you have his leash? I think this big boy needs to take care of some urgent business.”
“Oh, God. I am the worst dog mom on the planet.”
“Nah. I am certain he can sense your unease,” I say taking the leash from her. “I’ll take him out and you can either come with
us or stay here. Either way, I'll be right back.” She takes in a deep breath and let it out slowly.
“I’ll come with you. You’re the man I spoke to on the phone, right?”
“Yes, ma’am,” I respond politely though she is very young. No older than twenty perhaps.
“Ethel is fine,” she says laughing a little while stepping out of the car. I put the leash on Ten’s collar and let him hop out of the car. I lead him over to the run we have set up on the west lawn and let him loose inside of it. I close the gate and lean on it. She watches Ten run around for a bit and then looks at me.
“Tell me about you,” I say.
“That’s my least favorite subject,” she says looking at the ground.
“That’s too bad. I bet she’s a fascinating subject,” I say shrugging my shoulders.
“Tell me about you first,” she says reaching out and touching my forearm.
“Alright,” I begin. “In a nutshell, I am thirty, single, a veterinarian, a dog trainer, and I love my mom.” She laughs.
“Also, in a nutshell, I am nineteen, single, a dog mom, and I bake cookies. I also love my mom,” she adds quickly. I chuckle, then whistle for Ten to come back. He listens to me right away. He’s in the right frame of mind to be taught.
“There, that wasn’t so hard, was it?”
“No. You are easy to talk to,” she says giving me a megawatt smile that hits me right in the heart.
“Let’s take this conversation into my office,” I say, letting her walk-in front of me. I stifle a groan as her ass sways as she moves.
I am so screwed.
Chapter 2
Ethel Mason
My heart is going a million miles an hour and for the first time in three years, it's not because I am having an anxiety attack. Three years ago, my life changed forever. One minute, I am a happy go lucky girl, the only thing I worried about was if I was going to pass my math test. Now, I worry about everything. Fuck, I even worry about worrying. I am a nineteen-year-old woman who can't leave her apartment without having a panic attack.
How can something that only took ten minutes to impact my life forever?
My life was perfect until that day when a crazy-ass gunman decided to rob the bank my mom and I were at. No one was hurt well, at least not physically but mentally I am so fucked ever since that day. I can't leave my house without feeling the crippling fear that something bad is going to happen the minute I walk out my front door. How can I still be so afraid? Even though the man was caught five days later. It was so stupid actually. He couldn't get the dye that exploded all over his face off and had to go to the hospital because he was allergic to it. I spent six months in court with that man while he fought tooth and nail to get off. When he was sentenced to eighteen years in prison, I thought that I would be fine after that. The boogeyman was locked away, but it didn't help at all. That man ruined that part of me. The part where I felt safe and now, I live with a constant fear that something bad is going to happen.
It has gotten so bad that my mom got me my dog, Ten. I thought she was crazy, like really what the fuck is a dog going to do for me when I have a panic attack? I have only had him for three days and he seems to know when I am freaking out and he hasn't even been trained yet. Hence why I am here with the sexiest man I have ever seen in my life and my heart is pounding because I want to fling myself at the tall, dark, handsome man and see just what he can do with all of those muscles. He places his hand on the small of my back and I jump.
He leans closer and I feel his warm breath against my ear as he whispers, “Don't worry Sweetheart, I would never hurt you.”
I almost moan out loud for fuck’s sake. “I know you won't.” I don't know how I know that, but deep down in my bones, I know that he would never hurt me. He pulls away and I miss his touch. He clears his throat.
“We just have some paperwork to fill out.”
“Okay.” I bite my lip and sit down. I expect him to sit on the opposite side of the desk but instead, he sits down in the seat right next to me. He says something but I am too busy looking at his arms to hear what he says. He clears his throat again and my eyes snap up to meet his. He gives me a sexy grin causing me to blush and look down at my hands. I can’t believe I just got caught checking out his arms.
“You okay, sweetheart?”
“Yep.” My voice comes out high pitched and I wish the floor would swallow me whole. Luckily, he doesn't say anything, and we spend the next twenty minutes coming up with a schedule and things that will help Ten learn things at home as well. After we are done, he walks me back to my car.
“Would you like to go to dinner?” he blurts out as soon as I am settled in the car, surprising the crap out of me. Oh my God!
“I… I... I...um yes.” I nod my head up and down like a bobblehead doll. He grins.
“What's your address? I’ll be there to get you at seven,” he asks leaning on his elbows inside my open car window. I grin and rattle it off.
“See you then, Jeremy.” After I leave, I call my mom and let her know that I just got done at Top Dog and that I was on my way home. After I hang up with her, I go pick up my Walmart order. I love that I don't have to walk into the store anymore to get the things that I need.
When I get home, I go over my emails for work. My boss, Genevieve Dubois, is one of the head sales strategists for the major car manufacturer we work for in Michigan. She is one of the only people that would even consider hiring me for a personal assistant job from home. She is the reason I found Top Dog in the first place. She just got a little puppy that she needs help training and I am the one that had to make an appointment for her.
It isn’t until I get in the shower that I start to panic. I have a date. My very first date and I have nothing to fucking wear. This is a disaster. That fucking nagging little voice that makes me feel crazy slowly seeps in and I start to hyperventilate. I want nothing more than to go on a date with Jeremy but how the fuck am I going to do that when I can’t leave my house without freaking out? What if he thinks that I am crazy or too much to handle?
He’s going to leave before I even get to know him, all because I can’t stand leaving my house. There is no way this is going to fucking work out between us. I manage to get out of the bathroom before the walls start to feel like they are closing in on me and I can’t breathe. I feel soft fur rub against my side then Ten licks my cheek. There is a sharp knock on the door, but I can’t get up or even think about getting up.
I hate when this happens it makes me realize that no matter how normal I want to be, this crippling anxiety will always ruin my fucking life. I curl up into a ball and sob, wishing that my life could be different.
Chapter 3
Jeremy
After a few more knocks, I hear Ten inside whining. Without thinking, I kick her door in like I am a fucking cop. I take a quick second to ensure her dog is okay, but once I am assured that he is, I go in search of her. Her living room is clean and orderly as is her kitchen. Her bathroom is as well, but the condensation on the mirror tells me she just took a shower. The only other door in the apartment is open and I head in there. This room looks like a bomb went off. There are clothes discarded everywhere. I hear sobbing coming from the direction of the closet, so I make my way there and open the door. I see her lying on the floor on top of more clothes, curled up in a tight ball, crying. She’s naked, wet, and shivering. Now isn’t the time to get turned on by her, so I do a quick scan around the room and locate her robe. She needs nurturing and I am about to the most nurturing man she’s ever fucking met. Grabbing the robe, I wrap her up in it, lift her into my arms, and carry her out to her couch.
I sit with her on my lap. Her arms are around my neck and my hands are soothing her by rubbing up and down her back. When her crying and hiccups subside, I try talking to her.
“What was that about, sweetheart?”
“I couldn’t do it,” she says sniffling.
“Do what?” I say dreading what she is going to say.
/>
“Go out,” she says.
“Go out with me or in general,” I ask. She sits up and looks at me.
“Oh, God. In general. In general. I was very much looking forward to going out with you.” Ten jumps up on the couch and lays next to Ethel.
“Well, that settles it then,” I start. Her eyes go wide. “I am going to cook for you. Right after I fix your door. I may have kicked it in.” For the first time, she looks around the room. Ten is at my feet, but the door is dangling on its hinges.
“You kicked in the door?” she asks.
“I had to. You didn’t answer the door and Ten was whining this high-pitched whine. I knew I had to get inside to you.”
“You did?” She stares at me for a minute before she places her lips on mine in a quick kiss. “Shit. I’m sorry,” she says looking away from me. I tip her chin so that she looks at me again.
“Don’t apologize for kissing me, sweetheart. And I broke down the door, Ethel. Let me fix the door and get it secured for you. Then I’ll cook.”
“I could order some pizza or some Chinese,” she says standing from my lap.
“Whatever you want,” I say getting off the couch and moving toward the door.
“Pizza. Pizza is always the answer,” she says laughing.
“Sounds good,” I say surveying the damage I did. The door is completely busted, locks and all.
The good thing about Detroit is that we can get anything repaired pretty much twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. Pulling out my phone, I call a repair place. They can be out here in less than an hour so that works for me.
