The Cowboy’s Daughter

“When did you talk to Billy?” Trent asked.

“This morning,” she said. “He was teaching the junior class. He’s bringing in some mini bulls for bucking stock next month.”

Trent winced and sat up a bit. “I don’t think they’re ready yet.”

She snorted. “I don’t think you have a leg to stand on for that argument.”

  “Literally.” He grinned.

Handing him her phone, Kelly gave him a kiss that made him wish his private room had a lock on his door. He watched the video she took of the kids and nodded. “Michael is looking good.”

“Everyone sends their prayers and best wishes that you heal up quickly.” Smiling, she brushed a stray hair off his forehead.

“Every day is one step closer.” He was content to recuperate with his daughter and the love of his life. It beat the hell out of the last time, when it had just been him and Billy. He was fortunate and he would never take them for granted. If it took getting knocked around by that ornery bull, it was worth it.

The process of him buying the ranch from her father was a slow one that Trent was glad to let Billy and the lawyers handle. Frank was being stubborn about letting go, which shocked absolutely no one. For the moment, the ranch still belonged to the Sullivan family and might remain in the family, but Frank was willing to sell him a few acres for his school and enough for a house and a small farm. Trent had high hopes that by the time the bill of sale was finalized, no matter which way things went, he could convince Kelly to marry him.

Kelly sat at the top of the bed and took him into her arms for a kiss that made him wonder how creative they could get with his leg rebroken in three places. The doctors said he would never walk without limping. Watch him. They said he would need to use a cane for the rest of his life. They’d see about that. And they said he’d never ride a horse again.

Boy, were they in for a surprise?

He had promised Kelly, though, that his days on top of a bull were over and he would keep that promise.

“What was that for?” he asked when they came up for air.

Alissa had grown bored, waiting for him to move his checker piece and was playing a game on her mother’s phone.

  “Because I love you.”

“I love you too,” Alissa piped up.

That choked him up every time.

“And I wanted to give you a little incentive to get better soon so we can go home,” she said.

“Do we have a home yet?”

“Not yet,” she said. “But I think we can arrange some quality time in the Bluebonnet Inn until we have a certificate of occupancy.”

  “That’s definitely an incentive.”

They kissed until a nurse came in and cleared his throat.

“Have a good physical therapy session,” Kelly said, winking at him. Her mouth was puffy from his kisses. Trent would have much rather gotten physical with her than do weight training with the nurse.

“Come on, Loverboy,” the nurse said. “Let’s see if you can last more than eight seconds on the rowing machine.”
