“It does. But like always, we’ll muddle through.” They sat there, neither of them speaking for another half hour. Their meals came, and they were eating when Rylie thought of someone that might be able to help them. “Remember that woman from college that we knew? Her name was Kelly. Her sister and mom, they just died here recently, I think I heard. But we could go and stay with her for a couple o’ days, don’t you think? It would be really nice to go someplace that no one knows us. Kelly was such a nice person back then.”
“Do you remember her last name?” Rylie said it would come to her. “I’m sure I don’t have to remind ya, sister mine, but in order ta go stay with someone, it’s usually good form ta know their last name. I mean, I’d be sorta put out if ya came callin’ to my home and said, ‘Ryan what’s your name, thanks for lettin’ us sponge off you for a few days while my sister hides from the President o’ the United States.’”
“Dalton. Her last name is Dalton. I’ll ring her up right now and see what she has ta say. I think I read that she was married, but surely they won’t mind us hanging out for a day or two.” Ryan pointed out that she was going to be on crutches. “Yes, but I’ll take care o’ ya so that ya don’t get in their way.”
“Gee, thanks. Are ya going to pat my ass with powder too, and make sure I have my— Ouch, that hurt.” Rylie told her that she’d meant for it to. “Ya are not nice. Have you heard that lately from me? I think ya are meaner than I am.”
“No one is meaner than you are, Ryan. Ya are the picture that they use in the dictionary when they put the word there. Ya have no idea how many times a day I have ta tell people that it’s not me they’re lookin’ at, but ya. Ya have caused me no end of trouble.” Ryan stared at her, then asked her if she’d just made a joke. “Believe it or not, I can tell a joke and make a funny as well as other people. Ya are just are too mean ta notice. Now hush while I try and figure out her number.”
Ryan ate while she did some research. When she remembered the name of her friend’s old landlord, Rylie called Mr. Bigalow. After that, it was two more calls before she was connected to their friend.
“Oh Kelly, it’s so wonderful ta hear your voice again. After all this time too.” Kelly told her that she was so glad that she’d called, she was feeling a little down. “We are too. Mom and Dad died in a car accident a couple a’ months ago. Ryan and I have been workin’ our butts off takin’ care of everythin’ here.”
Rylie told her about how Ryan had been shot today, and that they were in dire need of a nice vacation. It never occurred to her to beg for a stay there just yet. It had been so wonderful talking with her. Like old times.
“I’m so very sorry about your parents. They were the nicest people in the world to me. Your brother too. But you two? You were all I needed to get through life back then. Look, I miss you two more than I could have thought I did. I’m sending someone for you.” Rylie told her that she didn’t have to do that. They would be fine. “No arguments. I’m sending someone to you right now. Tell me which hospital Ryan is in. Is she still as mean as a rattlesnake on a bad day? Christ, I loved her temper. She could rile up a group of people, then walk away when they realized they didn’t even know what they were doing. You have to come for a long visit.”
“Kelly, to be honest with ya, we thought about just for a couple a’ days. But hearin’ about you havin’ a new baby and all, we can do somethin’ else.” Rylie looked at Ryan, who was asleep again. “It’s been hard, I won’t lie to ya, but I made a mistake in callin’ ya. Not the callin’ part, but thinkin’ you’d put us up for a couple a’ days. I don’t even know where you’re livin’ right now.”
“Don’t worry about a thing. I’ll have someone there by morning. You two will enjoy it so much here that you’ll never want to leave.”
Rylie didn’t think that was possible—they had a life here. But when she hung up, Rylie was excited about the prospect of having a nice little bit of time off. It would be good for them both, she thought.
