Claudia and Olivia rushed to hug Keila in solidarity.
“It’s going to be all right, Mom,” said Olivia. “Even if it’s cancer, the chances of survival are huge these days.”
“Don’t say the word!” yelled Claudia.
Oscar wobbled away to the backyard, engulfed in denial, and stood in the middle of the keloid scar under pounding rain. How long did he stand there, soaking wet, his mind a jumble of thoughts, conjuring possible outcomes for Keila, for himself, for his daughters? What a way to end the year, and what a way to start the new one.
A few minutes later, Keila and the girls rushed out to the backyard, skipping puddles, protected by an oversize valet umbrella, and gathered around Oscar, the whole family hugging one another to avoid getting wet. And at that very moment, Oscar realized that in all the uncertainty that awaited the people that he loved the most, a single thing was undeniable: never before had his family been such a tight knot of love.
