He materializes above us, a solid black hole where his face should be. “Master, should I lay on the floor?”

“Only if you want to,” I reply on a slow exhale.

Cocking his head to the right, his gaze shifts, and I assume he’s looking at Reagan. One knee almost hits the ground. He thinks better of it and stands up again. “I don’t see the point.”

“Did anyone see Amelia?” Rowan asks the inevitable question, not hiding the panic in his voice. His phone is in his hand and I can see Amelia’s name on the screen with his finger hovering over the call button.

“She was not in the building,” the General confesses.

“Good, she escaped,” I mumble, lying as still as I can.

“Yes, with the vampire,” the General adds.

All three of us shoot off the floor. Rowan and I use Reagan to get up. Her gaze flickers between our broken, swollen bodies. “She’s going to need a different rescue team,” she murmurs in a knowing tone.

“What vam—why would you let a vampire take her?” Rowan fumes, his question laced with contempt.

“Should she have stayed here?” the General inquires without a hint of sarcasm.

Rowan swings at el Cucuy. It’s the slowest hook I’ve ever seen, and everyone can see it coming. His fist cleaves through curling shadows.

“Cucuy,” I say calmly. He reappears only to vanish before Rowan sucker punches him.

“Do you want to find your girlfriend?” Reagan questions with irritation. “Because he’s your best chance.”

“Cucuy, I need to know why you thought it was a good idea to let Amelia leave with a vampire.” Half my face is throbbing, and it’s taking the few stray threads of patience I have left not to thrash him myself.

  Do not be that person.

Because he will be forced to take it.

“The command was to save her by any means necessary,” the General clarifies. “The vampire was the obvious choice when you were not available.”

Rowan misses the third shot he takes and frustrated Spanish curses echo inside the building.

“We hunt demons. How hard can it be to find your girlfriend?” I question casually, holding my ribs. Avoiding his eyes, I keep my expression neutral with a teasing tilt to my mouth, and try to keep my anxiety to a minimum. I can pretend to be in control long enough to figure this out.

Lying to Rowan has been part of my brotherly responsibilities since he was little. What I didn’t say is, how hard can it be to find your girlfriend—alive.
