“Did you…” John stopped himself, his head shaking slowly back and forth. “No.” The two steps that separated us disappeared and I was in his arms as he hugged me fiercely.

My nose was buried in his armpit but I didn’t care. All of John’s worries and fears washed over me paralyzing me. My poor friend feared the very worse yet he was here hugging me, supporting me.

Pushing lightly at his muscular chest gave me some breathing room. “I didn’t kill them,” I answered honestly.

His dark lashes rested on his cheeks several times as he blinked slowly, his hard, calloused hands still gently holding on my upper arms. As he let out a pent-up breath, his eyes sought mine and I saw a flash of relief and something else.

“Kiss him,” Aunt Prudy’s voice hissed in my ear.
