“Most of the credit belongs to Aaron realizing which path he should be on,” I said.

“You don't give yourself enough credit for the role you played.”

“I don't need to give myself credit. That's for others to give or not give.”

“Well,” Jessica said, “Aaron must agree with me. He sent you two tickets for the bowl game in appreciation for all you did for him.”

  “Fifty yard line,” I said.

“See,” she said. “Who gets two tickets on the fifty yard line for nothing?”

  “Usually not me.”

  “There you go.”

“Okay, fine,” I said. “I should know better than to argue with a former attorney.”

“Even if I didn't have a law degree, you would be wise to always agree with me.”

  “Is that so?”

“Makes everything much easier,” she said.

  “Duly noted,” I said.

Jessica raised her wine glass. “To the best private investigator in Cambridge,” she said.

  “Just Cambridge?” I said.

She smiled at me. If we could harness the wattage, it would power all the Commonwealth.

We drank our wine as Norah Jones serenaded us with the Ned Jones and Hoagy Carmichael song, The Nearness of You.

The moment was about as perfect as they come. Such moments provide purpose and meaning in my life. So are helping people like Tina Ross and Aaron Hurley. It is why I am a private investigator. I chase shadows so others don't have to hide from them.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK you for taking the time to read what I write. None of this would be possible without my readers. THANK YOU! It is also true that a writing project does not come into existence without the help of others. I want to thank my editor Lois for her dedication to making what I write better. A big thanks to my family for their unending support, especially to my wife and our son.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

JASON RICHARDS IS THE author of the Drew Patrick private investigator series. He has enjoyed reading detective stories and thrillers since he was a child. His biggest writing inspirations are the tough and witty hard-boiled detectives Spenser by Robert B. Parker, and Elvis Cole by Robert Crais.

He loves writing the Drew Patrick novels and hopes his readers enjoy being part of the adventures. Like his main character, Jason is a lifelong fan of Boston sports – especially his beloved Red Sox. Jason lives in Massachusetts with his wife, son, and their Beagle-mix dog (the inspiration for Dash).
