Life Is Sweet

“I’ve gotten a taste for candy,” I said. “And I’ve gotten a taste for you, too.”

“You could be out there making a million dollars a year working on—”

“Kayla,” I said, running a hand along her cheek, “I don’t need that. I have money. I want to work with you.”

Her eyes sparkled. “I… wow…” She sniffled, her lips trembling. “I’m so lucky those jellybeans exploded.”

“And I’m so lucky you didn’t notice the giant switch on the spout.”

“Hey!” She laughed, reddening. “You knew when you fell for me I was a clumsy ditz!”

I kissed her, long and sweet, our bodies fitting together perfectly—no rush, no drive, just holding that soft, tender touch.

“Exactly,” I laughed softly after I’d pulled away. “None of this would have happened if you’d just flipped the switch.”

“You’re lucky I love you, making fun of me like that.”

“I’m always lucky you love me. And lucky to love someone like you.” I stretched. “So, plans for the day, professor? I’m a full-time student now.”

She snorted. “I told you, Kayla University closed. You beat it. You were too good.”

“Well, I’m seeking further one-on-one instruction from my favorite professor. I’m all yours. Show me how to have some fun.”

“Some fun?” She giggled, looking down. “Maybe… if it started with reversing this position…”

I was happy to reverse the position. I flipped over, pinning her down against the sofa, and I moved down to kiss her neck. “Right here on the sofa?” I laughed. “With the bunny jumping all over us?”

  “Mm. Maybe in the bedroom.”

“Or,” I said, breathing into her ear, “you could do exactly as I say, take everything off, and let me do whatever I want with you in the shower.”

Her pupils dilated and I felt her breath hitch. “That… that one sounds pretty good,” she breathed.

I walked her into the bathroom, turned the shower on warm and leaned against the door to watch her slip off her robe—she didn’t have a bra on underneath, and she slipped her panties down, and even though I’d done everything I could have possibly wanted with her beautiful body last night, I still found a lot of new things I wanted to do this early.

I backed her up against the wall and slipped out of my clothes too, kissing her fiercely and moving down once she was breathless to suck on her nipples right in front of the mirror.

“Watch me,” I said, a hungry rumble in my voice. “In the mirror. Look at yourself getting played with.”

“Oh my god I’m not going to last long like this,” she laughed weakly, pressing her back against the wall, clutching the towel rod as she gasped for breath, staring past me and at us in the mirror. The self-conscious flush, the way she bit her lip…

“I don’t want you to last long.” I slipped a hand down between her legs, slick from the moisture in the air and from her already getting wet. “At least, not the first time.”

I only got a little ways with that, rubbing gently between her legs while I sucked on her nipple, relishing the way she squirmed and bit back little gasps, before the mirror fogged up too much for that plan to work anymore. That was fine, though. I walked her into the shower, holding her from behind, running my hands up along her wet skin, fondling her breasts as the water streamed down over them. I kissed her neck, kissed down along her back, and she thrashed, giggling.

“Hey—don’t get the hot water in my hair, you’ll wash the color out.”

“Hey, I’m the one who gives the orders here,” I breathed into her ear, tugging her back further away from the water, squeezing her tightly and slipping a hand down between her legs. She gasped when I slipped a finger inside her, everything so wet it slipped in effortlessly—and then a second finger just as easily.

When she threw her head back, groaning with the way I moved inside her, I pulled her into a hot, wet kiss, one hand on her chin angling her back to kiss me and the other hand moving inside her, faster in response to her hips rocking, faster and harder. Adoring every little sound and every little twitch.

I drove her further, harder, longer, and when she shuddered with enough of a cry to break the kiss, I moved down to rub her clit with my other hand, and she fell back into me, all the wet skin contact slick and slippery.

  “Oh, god, Melissa, I’m—”

She didn’t finish her sentence, but that was fine. Her body finished it for her, as her words died out into a long, high-pitched moan, her hips moving with me, her back arching. I could feel the way her legs shook as she came down from her orgasm, collapsing into me, clutching at me and gasping for breath.

“Oh… oh, wow,” she said, her voice shaky. I pulled my fingers slowly out of her, running my lips along her neck slowly, kissing here and there.

“Squeaky clean now,” I whispered, holding her tight as her legs faltered. “Always good to start the day with a shower.”

She laughed, swatting at the air around my arm, fumbling behind her. “You are ridiculous. You didn’t even use soap.”

I licked my lips. “Well, we’re not done yet, now, are we?”

I’d never even had shower fantasies. But somehow, seeing Kayla naked anywhere managed to give me a lot of fantasies about wherever it was.

  Chapter 24

  Kayla

My head was still buzzing a while after. We’d always had to keep sex short. And I didn’t think I was up to the kind of sessions that took place across three different rooms very often, but wow. Melissa was something else. Even an hour after, all dressed up and getting in her car, I couldn’t really look at her without flushing, seeing her naked body in my imagination.

“You okay?” she said as she pulled out away from my place, with a smirk that said she knew exactly why I wasn’t okay.

“I’m doing super great,” I said, completely truthfully.

“I’m glad,” she laughed. “I have to say, this whole free time thing is pretty interesting. Do you want to get breakfast first, or head straight to the shop?”

“Whatever you think will be most fun, Miss Graduated-over-a-Hundred-Percent.”

“Oh, another exam?” she laughed. “All right. In that case, what we’re going to do is go to the grocery store and buy everything we need to make pancakes with candies and rainbow sprinkles.”

I laughed. “Do you think I’m that predictable?”

  “Do you not want that?”

I huffed. “Cooking with you sounds amazing no matter what we make.”

And in the end, we made pancakes with candies and rainbow sprinkles. And after objecting, I hated to admit how adorable they were.

And I learned that for as amazing as she was, Melissa was not a good cook. But we got to laugh it off, because, hey, we had time to learn.

God, we had so much time now.

It was a solid two hours later we finally did pull up to the shop, and maybe we should have been a little more subtle at work, but I didn’t really care that much, so Melissa and I strode hand-in-hand through the front door, where the doorbell jingled in that cute little way that always made me so happy, and Shay looked up from behind the counter saying, “Hi, welcome to… oh. It’s my boss.”

“Um,” I said, stifling a giggle, bringing Melissa over behind the counter. “You see, the thing is, that’s actually what I wanted to say…”

She looked between me and Melissa. “You’re leaving the store to go run off with your girlfriend?”

“No, no. You have two bosses now.”

Shay’s pupils dilated. “Wait a second. Wait a… second. Did you convince her to leave a billion-dollar corporation to manage a candy shop?”

“Actually,” Melissa said, “I left my job and came to ask her for a co-owner arrangement.”

  Shay blinked fast. “You…”

“We’re, uh,” I said, shuffling up a little closer to Melissa’s side. “You know. We’re getting a lot closer these days. We’re kind of… in love, you
know.”

“Damn. As much as I love you, Kay, I did not expect you to bag a multimillionaire like this.”

“I’m not that great,” Melissa laughed. “You should have seen me in the kitchen this morning.”

“Oh, you should be glad you missed it!” I lit up. “I’m lucky I still have a home! I had to hustle Leonardo out of there before the smoke turned him into a wheezing old man!”

“Hey, that last pancake I made was the right color,” she said, and I patted her on the shoulder.

“Melissa, you did great. I loved your dedication.”

Melissa leaned against the counter and grinned at Shay. “Don’t worry. I’m a good amount better at business than I am at pancakes.”

Shay’s eyes went wide. “So, like, is this place going to become some kind of international chain?”

“Forget that,” Melissa laughed. “That would take all the fun out of things, wouldn’t it?”

The doorbell jingled, and Shay straightened her back. “Oh. Hold on. Let me go take this. Uh… nice to get the chance to work with you, Melissa. I feel like I already know you secondhand. And intimately, too.”

She slipped away before I could yell at her, and left me clearing my throat, turning back to the back room. “She wasn’t supposed to tell anyone I’d mentioned juicy details.”

“Don’t worry,” she laughed, following me into the back room. “If you like talking to her about that, I’ll make sure to give you a lot of conversation topics in the near future.”

I blushed hard. “We came here to focus on work! On work!”

“Oh, of course. I wouldn’t dream of anything else.”

I squinted at her. The look on her face said she would dream of something else. “Sure,” I said. “Sure. So…”

“This is a nice shop,” she said, looking around at the backroom. “I think this place could be a lot of fun.”

I looked her over, the sight of her—of this incredible woman I loved, here in the back of my store, here to share every part of my life—and it took my breath away. I reached out without thinking, took her hands, and kissed her.

“What do you think the future is going to be like?” I said after pulling away from the kiss—just a quick peck on the lips in a cold backroom surrounded by shelves, but even just that little thing was sweeter than any candy.

“Who knows,” she said, staring down into my eyes, her eyes shining. “I know it’s going to have you in it. I know things will be rough sometimes, but I know we’re going to work it all out. And I’m going to keep being happy to have you like this, because I spent too much time keeping myself just almost happy.”

I shook my head, captivated by her gaze. “I can’t believe you left your job for me.”

“I can’t believe I took so long. But now that I’m here, I see what you mean.”

  “What I mean about what?”

She smirked. “Life really is sweet.”

She kissed me again, and I couldn’t help thinking she was right.

I was Kayla Spencer, and life was sweet.
