Citizens of Austria, Germany, Ireland, Lichtenstein, Mexico, Switzerland and the UK are able to extend this visa once, for another 90 days. To do so, you need to apply at the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau (東京入国管理局; Tokyo Nyūkoku Kanrikyoku GOOGLE MAP ; %03-5796-7111; www.immi-moj.go.jp; 5-5-30 Kōnan, Minato-ku; h9am-noon, 1-4pm Mon-Fri; g99 from Shinagawa Station, east exit to Tokyo Nyūkoku Kanrikyoku-mae, dRinkai line to Tennōzu Isle) before the initial visa expires.
Resident Card
Anyone entering Japan on a visa for longer than the standard 90 days for tourists will be issued a resident card, which must be carried at all times.
Work Visas
Arriving in Japan and looking for a job is quite a tough proposition these days, though people still do it and occasionally succeed in finding visa sponsorship. With that said, there are legal employment categories for foreigners that specify standards of experience and qualifications.
Once you find an employer in Japan who is willing to sponsor you, it is necessary to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from your nearest Japanese immigration office. The same office can then issue your work visa, which is valid for either one or three years. This procedure can take two to three months.
Working-Holiday Visas
Citizens of Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Taiwan and the UK, and residents of Hong Kong between the age of 18 and 30 (or 18 and 25 for Australians, Canadians and Koreans) can apply for a working-holiday visa. The visa is designed to enable young people to travel during their stay, and there are legal restrictions about how long and where you can work. The working-holiday visa must be obtained from a Japanese embassy or consulate abroad. Visit www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/w_holiday.
Volunteering
Most meaningful volunteer work in Tokyo requires Japanese language ability; however, there are a few organisations that accept short-term, English-speaking volunteers.
Hands on Tokyo (www.handsontokyo.org) Partners with several local organisations that need volunteers to help in English classes and with outdoor activities.
Second Harvest Japan (https://2hj.org/english) Always needs volunteers to prepare food and serve at its weekly Saturday soup kitchen for the homeless; in Ueno-kōen.
