“All too well.”
“I can’t believe you all survived this whole time out here with those things running around.”
“It hasn’t been easy.” Axel pushed off the vehicle. “I think Sloan’s calling you over. Nice to meet you, man.”
Archer slapped Axel on the back as he passed. “Thanks for saving our lives.”
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
“How’s your sister doing?” Axel asked as Britney climbed into bed.
“I can’t believe everything they went through.” The two had talked for hours, sharing their survival stories. “Did you know they were stayin’ in the same place as the president?”
“Archer might have mentioned it.”
The excitement of the day had worn Britney out, but there was still so much she wanted to tell Axel. “They know how this all started.”
“Really?” Axel shifted to face her. “How?”
“It was what we talked about on Christmas Eve. The NATO drug trials, the one Sabrina and Thomas were a part of. That wasn’t a synthetic drug. They found an alien substance in an asteroid, used it on some lab rats and figured out that it cured everything. Then without doin’ any more studies, they gave it to people and turned them into monsters. Sloan said it consumes the organs and uses the brain to control the body.”
“So people aren’t infected, they’re infested with an alien organism?” Axel’s face paled. “That’s fucking nuts.”
“It also means there’s no chance at a cure. No vaccine.”
Axel wiped the sweat beading on his brow. “This isn’t a zombie apocalypse, it's an alien apocalypse.”
Britney rolled to her back and stared up at the ceiling. “I don’t even know how to wrap my mind around that. How do you stop somethin’ like this?”
Axel heaved her into his chest. “I don’t know if you can.”
She lay there for a moment, enjoying the sound of his heartbeat. “Can you believe my sister is alive?”
He chuckled. “It’s almost crazier than the body-snatching aliens.”
“Ugh.” Britney shuddered. “I can’t even.”
“You know what else I find strange?” Axel ran his hand up and down her back. “The girl you turned into when you saw your sister. All giddy and more country than normal. I’m pretty sure you said ‘Y’all.’”
Britney giggled. “Old habits, I guess. I’m so happy she’s here, and the kids are over the moon.”
“I bet.”
As excited as she was to have her sister back, she couldn’t help but think of all the other issues that came along with it. “We have a lot more mouths to feed now. I think Sloan said something like forty-two.”
“More people to help around here.”
Britney glanced up at him. “When did you become Mr. Positive? I thought for sure you’d be the one worryin’ about stuff like this.”
Axel kissed her forehead. “I just witnessed the miracle of apocalyptic miracles today. Two sisters who lived across the country from each other reunited. It blows my mind.”
“How are we goin’ to make this work?”
“We’re survivors, babe. We’ll figure it out. We always do.”
