CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

It had been four months since the accident. It was April 14, 1947. Connie was still in a coma. Ruby and Henry entered Connie’s hospital room, this time in the afternoon. They stood at her bedside and talked briefly with Father Oliver before arranging the room’s two chairs in a way that would allow them see Connie’s good eye, even though it was closed, as it had been since the accident. Ruby and Henry must have glanced at Connie’s closed eye every minute. It was the focal point of their love, and they prayed it would suddenly open, like the flick of a light switch, and—lo and behold—Connie’s light would bring joy to a room where there had been none for many months.
