I could feel myself scowling and tried my best to school my face into something more neutral as I stalked through the Spaceport, in search of the exit.

Honestly, what in the world was she thinking? I was ashamed to think of what she might be enduring because of me. And for her to think I would just pretend that I didn’t have a sister and jump ship at the first chance I got?

  It really hurt.

I’d always wanted to explore the vast universe, see what there was out there…. But not at the expense of losing my only family.

She should have consulted me first before just doing something like this on her own. But what’s done is done and reflecting on her decisions would get me nowhere.

I just hope that she might have found some happiness in the marriage and that he treated Mallory a whole hell of a lot better than the men mother used to bring around the house. I could only hope. The Striss were still very secretive and we didn’t know much about them.

Hell, from what I heard, we had only recently learned of the location of their flock due to some progression with our technology in the past couple of years. Which, now that I think about it, is kind of frightening. They seemed to be—technologically wise—so much more advanced than us.

In recent developments, though, with my sisters marriage, I knew that the Settlement was benefitting with much needed trade. And I’d heard that there was a Striss man working with the government officials here in the Settlement. So my next step was to somehow get in touch with him somehow and find some way to reach my sister’s side.

I would find her, one way or another. I could feel my determination strengthening my resolve and took a shaky breath before pulling the doors of the Spaceport open and walking outside.

Stepping out of the massive building and into the open air was almost like an event in and of itself for me. It had been a long six and a half months since I'd last been planetside and it felt good to be back. Hell, I’d been stuck on that medical station in space the entire time while they did their magic, so it was nice to breathe in the real air.

I didn’t allow myself to linger and started for the Council’s office.

The trip was uneventful, and didn’t take but about thirty minutes to walk the few blocks there. And to think I wouldn’t have been able to get around like this just a few months prior to my operations.

  ***

It didn’t take long for me to be rerouted from the council’s office. After being informed that the council was on break for the next couple of weeks, I racked my brain for ideas. I didn’t have weeks to wait. I wanted to see Mallory as soon as possible.

Plus with our house currently occupied, I didn’t have anywhere to stay. There was no way I was going to be gouged by the exorbitant prices of the hotels.

So I found myself heading back to the Spaceport to see if there were any expeditions heading out, but I knew it was a long shot. Those were few and far between due to all the monstrous animals that were eager to snack on some unsuspecting humans.

The devil dogs were reminiscent of the domesticated dogs that we’d brought with us to the planet, but were nothing like them. These animals were massive, hairless predators that hunted and brought down many a man without effort.

The only thing that kept them at bay was the barrier technology that made up the walls, with a far subpar version of it surrounding the smaller branch towns around the Settlement.

And even 50 or so years after the creation of the Settlement, we had little information on the native creatures that inhabited the planet. Or any way to kill them. None of our weapons were a match for them. They were like the perfect predator.

But I had to try. I had to get to Mallory. She was the only family I had.

“I need transportation,” I began, setting my pack down at my feet as I leaned on the counter to continue speaking with him.

“Where to?” The man asked, brow furled deep in thought at my request.

“Well that’s just it… I need to go to the Striss territory.” At the surprised look on his face, I continued on “I’m trying to find my sister.”

“Look ma’am…” He began, holding up his hands.

I interrupted, desperation building. If he couldn’t help me, I wasn’t sure what I’d do. Yes, I knew it was dangerous but at least with a vehicle, I’d have some form of protection against the wildlife. Not to mention, it would cut my travel time and increase the chance of survival.

“Please, I’m really worried about her.”

“Look, unless it’s to an established human territory on the planet or one of the other planets we’ve currently settled on, I can’t help you. No one is willing to risk death by going past our borders.”

I pulled my card out of my pocket, setting it on the counter between us. “I have plenty of money. I can pay, surely-”

  “Like I said, no one-”

“I can do it. I can take you.”

At the interruption, the man pursed his lips before shifting his eyes to the source of the voice behind me. They widened almost comically, peaking my interest. I glanced over my shoulder at the man who spoke up.

Only it wasn’t a man…. Not a human one anyway.

  A Striss.

He closed the distance between us, towering over me by a good foot at least. He had massive black wings that were folded behind him, and an impressive set of horns curving out of his skull.

I swallowed hard, my ears burning from embarrassment.

I suddenly found myself very envious of my sister at the moment because woah. He seemed to just exude masculinity.

“Oh….” My mouth felt dry all of a sudden. “Are you sure?”

He gave me a brief nod.

  “Thank you, sir.”

“It’s not a problem. Follow me so we can make arrangements.”

I bent down and grasped my bag in my hand before quickly following his retreating form. “Coming!”

  The Alien Soldier’s Runaway Bride

Long before Mallory married Alek’dar and Stephanie fell for Qui’da, Kypar saved Elizabeth.

Elizabeth lived the majority of her life on a spaceship—her destiny had been set in stone long before she was born when her ancestors decided to volunteer to colonize other planets due to the overpopulation problem on their homeworld Earth.

When the ship finally arrived at its destination just after her fifteenth birthday, she couldn't have been any happier. But that happiness was short-lived when the colonists learned of just how dangerous the planet's inhabitants actually were.

Life on the new planet was rough and it was only going to get harder for her when her stepfather decides that he doesn’t want another mouth to feed.

Kypar had been assigned to watch the weird beings that had colonized their planet—to assess their threat levels and whether or not they needed to be wiped out. It became abundantly clear almost immediately that they weren’t much of a threat when they couldn’t fend off a single rampaging rhodion from toppling several of their buildings. But then, they should have known better than to settle on the species nesting grounds.

His interest is piqued when he spots one of their females sneaking off into the woods to what would only amount to her certain death. His choice to follow her changes both their lives in ways they never thought possible.

  Defying the Devilish Duke

She never imagined meeting him again

When Victor had up and vanished all those years ago, Lisette could do nothing more than move on. She didn’t have time to think—let alone find—her wayward love. The years apart had done little to soothe the hurt lingering from his sudden departure but she had little choice but to take him up on his offer of marriage.

He was never going to let her go again

Victor had always regretted leaving Lisette behind, but he knew that there was more to this life than that poor, desolate village. He’d been foolish when he’d left her, but he would do everything in
his power to make it up to her—he would do anything if it meant she would come home to him.

Will their love be strong enough to stand up against those who would come between them?
