“Me, too, kiddo. Me, too.” Her father kissed the side of her head before lowering her back to her feet.
“You found your gift,” Kai called from the water.
She grabbed her father’s hand and towed him to the water’s edge. “Admiral Morrissey, this is my father.”
“Your father?” The admiral’s eyes darted between them “I didn’t make the connection. It’s nice to see you again, Jim.” Admiral Morrissey held out his hand. “What’s it been, thirty years?”
“At least that.” Her father wrapped the admiral up in a hug.
As soon as they backed up, the admiral’s face became all business. “I’ve been searching through all the information we downloaded from Octavious Vodnikski’s computers. I think we have a lead.”
Kai’s body stiffened. “A lead. I want in.”
“We want in.” Zale pulled Dylan up next to him.
“I assumed so. Take the week and then we can plan. The lead will wait.” Admiral Morrissey gave a quick wave and then dove back under the water. His mer-tail flapped in the air as a goodbye.
Her father stood, hands-on-hips, beside her. “It goes without saying that I want in as well.”
Her three mates looked at each other, avoiding her gaze, before all their eyes landed on her father. Kai stepped forward. “Wouldn’t dream of forcing you to sit this one out.”
Her father nodded, turned on his heel, and started back up the beach. Her mates followed.
She watched them walk past, each one continuing to avoid her gaze. If they thought she was staying behind, they all, including her father, had another think coming. But she’d let them think she didn’t want in until the end of the week. That way she could benefit as they attempted to butter her up before she pulled the rug from under their feet.
With a large smile, she followed them back to their new house, looking forward to the fun they’d have this week. Their last week before the hunt began.
