Spirit of Fae Academy

“I’m going to have a new roommate,” groaned Lily. “All this year, I’ve had the bedroom to myself, which almost made up for having to share this sitting room with you two.” She raised a haughty eyebrow at me and Evana. “But now, I hear somebody else is being moved in. A fae woman whom I’ve never met, which seems impossible in itself.”

“Speaking of fae we don’t know,” said Rook a little too casually. “I’m wondering if there will ever be an air fae mate for Ciara. If you don’t mind me mentioning it,” he said hurriedly.

I smiled at him. He was a dear. When we’d made the change from three in our bed to four, it was Rook who had been unsure about Alder. Now, after many long nights together, the two men were firm friends. Just as Rook and Owain had teamed together last year to be the rock I counted on and the force of love that made me shout with passion, now all three men were united. They were my own true mates.

Alder considered the point. “Since I was an air fae at one time in my life, that may fulfill the magic.” He sounded neutral, as if he would be fine with either outcome.

I was not, though. I loved him and his teachings dearly, but I knew he was wrong. There was an air fae out there for me. My magic yearned for the connection to be made.

Alder noticed everything about me. His lips twitched with humor as he offered a new idea. “You know, there was a memorable air fae I knew once, very long ago. He was a student at the Academy with me. My best friend, at one time, until he chose another life. He was tapped to be an Assassin, but he refused.”

“Nobody can do that,”” Lily scoffed. “It means leaving school.”

“And so he did,” said Alder. “I wonder where he is now.”

As I sat in the comfortable room with all the people I loved in the world, I wondered that as well. If there was a fae out there who was strong enough to face expulsion rather than serve the Queen, I wanted to know him.

Faintly, in the back of my mind, I felt a twitching sensation that it was mutual.
