The number of the Wolfenstein Reinforcements started thinning as time went on. It would not be long before they were entirely exterminated, probably before the hour had passed. But even so, they were willing to die for those people that are still being evacuated. All those innocent people that were saved were well worth it for these fighters that have suffered from being away from their families for so long. It was better to die in this place where they were defending their loved ones than to die in vain on alien soil...

A loud booming sound followed by multiple mysterious noises disseminated from a distance as a few of those flying Griffons exploded from the impact of an unknown attack. A few more noises followed by series of explosions covering the flanks of these flying beasts. They had no idea where they were getting hit from, let alone what they were getting hit with. The formation of the Garudia Kingdom was immediately destroyed in seconds as nearly a thousand of their troops were eliminated!

The blasts from said attacks killed a few dozens of the flying beasts in one shot...

A buzzing slate stopped above the knights that were still defending the western district. They had witnessed the sudden arrival of this mysterious entity that could wipe out the enemy in mere seconds. One of the knights exclaimed with joy.

"It's... It's our King! King Feihren! He has arrived..."

The knights became teary-eyed as they patted their breastplates. They had believed that this situation was hopeless. This knight knew about the prowess of their new king in terms of large-scale battles, and it seems that this time he will prove it once more. The knights that were fighting a battle that seemed unwinnable a few moments ago had their morale boosted to the heavens. Their king was like a bright beacon of hope.

The army of the Garudia kingdom then immediately changed tactics as they shifted their attacks towards the only flying unit amongst the enemy. It was indeed terrifying to fight against someone who could do such a massive amount of damage within an area. But it would be a different story if they could just close the distance and fight this supposed king of the Wolfenstein Kingdom in close quarter aerial combat.

"Defend the people on the ground."

Feihren straightforwardly commanded Jyuu to help him against those that are still attempting to attack below as he tossed Samael's gem towards one of the enemies that were closing in the distance.

Samael transformed mid-air as he grabbed a hold of one of the wings of the creature he appeared near, ripping it apart as both of them started descending. They ultimately crashed, but Samael made use of the beast to 'soften' his landing, squashing the poor wyvern into a pulp.

"Go put out the fires, then assist in evacuating the people. Carry as many as you can away from here," Feihren added as Samael nodded and immediately rushed forth.

There were indeed instances when a few griffon riders would glide lower than the Titan Slate and attack one of the injured knights on the ground. But Jyuu could easily defend the people below as he pounced towards the griffon, clawing its rider off as his jaws crushed the poor half-bird's skull. Being agile and all that, Jyuu had easily traversed through the lines as he defended every single one of the people on the ground, and made quick work of those who still dared.

Feihren continued his assault as he had confirmed the situation below. It was indeed getting better.

It was over an hour and the reinforcements from the capital had arrived. It was the worst-case scenario that the enemy was not hoping for. Hundreds of mages with flight magic were deployed and had quickly arrived on the scene. Leading them was the Prime Minister of the kingdom himself, Marvin. They had imagined that the western district would have fallen by now. Yet to their surprise, only a portion of it was destroyed and somehow, the kingdom had held on.

Marvin flew at a higher altitude to inspect the situation.

  "Feihren?"

Marvin did not expect that their king would arrive at this perilous time. It seems that Feihren would always be there when something that involves slaughtering arises. Commanding the fleet of flying mages, Marvin rushed forth towards Feihren.

The battle had been dragged for so long that the head of the attack for the Garudia army had decided that it was better off to retreat for now. They had lost over 4,000 troops already and that number was still steadily increasing as Feihren continued his assault. Although these riders had tried their best in an attempt to avoid the blasts, many were still unlucky as they would be hit by another incoming shot soon after they had evaded another.

The army of a few thousand flying beasts then turned their backs they burst forth in a hurry, immediately leaving the battlefield as if nothing had happened. Marvin arrived as he asked Feihren,

"Your Majesty, should we give chase?"

Feihren glanced at Marvin and the mages as he replied in a low voice.

"...You were late. Don't give chase, I'll handle it. Set up a magic barrier spanning the entire western wall."

Feihren was cold in his reply, yet his eyes could not avoid tearing up,

'You were late.' They were indeed late with the reinforcements. Yet Feihren could not help but also blame it all on himself as he was also 'late'. He should've arrived way before all this had happened...

But all this blame should not be placed on anyone within the kingdom, instead...

Aiming down the Demonic Carbine towards the direction of the enemy, Feihren then switched to WMD mode. The same ominous black aura covered Feihren as a straight beam of light flew through these chaotic skies... Wiping out the escaping enemies... Every last one of them...

Feihren landed as he hopped off the slate towards one of the bodies of these flying beasts.

Tearing off the cloth from the dead beast that bears the coat of arms of the Garudia Kingdom, Feihren stared at the horizon with bloodshot eyes...

  Chapter 62: King's Grieving

Walking towards the western wall, Feihren raised his hand, signaling to remove the magic barrier.

The battle was over as the enemies that had attempted to escape evaporated into thin air from the attack of the Demonic Carbine. A good chunk of the road and the deserted jungle on the western side of the kingdom went with them, clearing everything into nothing but a desolate plain.

Carrying a piece of cloth from a body that was closer to the wall, Feihren could be seen clenching his fist as tears flowed from his eyes. Entering the shattered gates, he commanded the clearing operation as he oversaw everything.

Samael and Jyuu helped with heavy works as the soldiers 'swept' together all the bodies, both enemies and allies. They burned the deceased Garudia riders and beasts as they carefully carried their fallen comrade's bodies to the graveyard to be given a proper burial.

Aside from the work of fixing everything in the western district, an eerie silence permeated the entirety of the Wolfenstein Kingdom as every one of the citizens was in a solemn mood.

It was already 7 in the morning when everything was finally 'settled'. The number of civilians that had lost their lives from this sudden attack numbered over a thousand. Although none of the citizens had blamed the king for this, Feihren could not help but feel that he was responsible for all this somehow. It could be easily said that he was not with his kingdom at the moment when the people needed him the most, and it grieved Feihren's heart to think of all this.

  ...

Feihren stationed additional troops, including a few mages, temporarily to the western gets until the matter of this sudden 'invasion' settles. Returning to the capital and into the castle, Feihren called for an emergency meeting within the throne hall. The Senate and all of the military officers gathered into a solemn discussion as the meeting started.

"This is the insignia of the Garudia Kingdom..."

Marvin silently spoke up as he inspected the bloodied piece of cloth that was placed on the round table. Feihren was sitting in one of the chairs quietly, as if he was pondering something. The meeting proceeded without him uttering a single word.

"There current king, if I am not m
istaken, is still Ivan?"

"It seems that he has the guts to make a move now huh?"

"The news of the coronation of a new king is what he was holding out for perhaps?"

"Well, the return of the garrisoned troops may also be one."

The heated discussion had gone on for quite awhile. The motive of why the Garudia Kingdom attacked was already established a long time ago. Even before the former king, Louie the 3rd, held the throne.

Yet, what gave King Ivan the confidence to attack now was what this meeting was pondering. It seems that it had something to do with the news of having a new king that was a total outsider. The disappearance of the entire royal family made it look weak and ripe for the taking to the Garudia Kingdom.

The problem now was, would the Garudia Kingdom send another attack after their first one seemingly failed? The military officers started discussing the possibilities of another upcoming attack... when Feihren spoke up.

"It's not a matter of them attacking again... For now, they do not know what had happened here, but it would only take a few days before they would feel that something would be amiss and send their second wave. Let's use that opportunity to prepare..."

The entire table listened in silence as the solemn expression on Feihren's face while talking gave them chills, as if the person talking to them was a whole other entity. It seems that this sudden invasion was something that triggered Feihren to take 'ruling a kingdom' more seriously. All of them nodded in approval as Feihren continued his speech.

"Use the budget for civil service in assisting the people with deceased relatives during the attack. Temporarily reduce the tax for the merchants on the western district."

"Send a group of representative to Sechua City and ask for temporary aid if need be. Tell them that the King of Wolfenstein asks for a return of favor."...

"We will need to bolster not only the west but also the eastern walls. Use the returned garrisoned troops to make an outpost on the western side, and then send people on the eastern walls to do repairs on the abandoned stronghold. Fix it."...

"Marvin, send a messenger to Old man Mendi. I'd like to ask a favor regarding raw materials. We'll pay as much as we can, use the budget for the defense. Ask for the blueprints for these things."

Feihren listed a few bulleted lines within an old parchment as he gave it to Marvin. Within the letter was a list of the elements Feihren would need to increase the defensive capability of the Wolfenstein Kingdom. As for the blueprints, it would be regarding those towers back then in the dwarven village. It seems that it could be put to good use here.

Feihren had assigned a few other tasks to the military officers as each and every one of them listened earnestly. It was the most thorough strategic meeting that they had ever taken part of with a King. This had never happened before, and it was their first time seeing a king actively participate in the affairs of his kingdom, even in the minor scale.

Although he might be a little cold for now, Feihren was thankful that these people are all loyal to him. It would be a shame to disappoint them by acting pathetic in times of trouble. It was best for him not to cry over spilled milk and instead move forward for the betterment of the kingdom.

Feihren had calculated that the report about the failure of the initial attack might quickly reach the ears of King Ivan, but it seems that he could take advantage of how fast the news flies. He pondered for a moment before he continued, looking straight towards the people of the Senate.

"As for the Senate, I'll need your approval in a certain announcement that I would make." Feihren added as the Senate inquired to what proposal he would ask for approval.

"I'll be waging war against the Garudia Kingdom, and every other kingdom within any continent that would try and interfere." Feihren coldly said as the Senate gasped cold air...

"Let's prove to these petty kings that the Wolfenstein Kingdom is not open for the taking, and is not something they can anger..."

  Chapter 63: Offense and Defense

Everything that Feihren commanded was then immediately put into action.

It was great news for the people in the western district that they were suddenly going to receive assistance from the capital. In the history of the Wolfenstein Kingdom, they had never experienced such a thing as 'calamity relief funds'. At first they even hesitated to accept the gracious help from their king.

The reformed system on the flow of how the taxes and funds work within the kingdom had a miraculous effect as the business district recovered easily, within mere days.

The side-effect of using the WMD towards the outskirts of the western wall was amazingly helpful for the merchants and traders that are coming from the southwest parts of the Blaz Continent. It made the path towards Wolfenstein easier, and very flat.

As for making cooperative trades, Feihren had sent delegates towards Sechua City. Mages who were able to use flight magic for a prolonged period of time and were adept at communication magic were the ones sent to quicken the pace of the travel and to have an easier method to relay the information to and fro. It only took a week before Feihren received the news of Allen's cooperation.

Feihren then dispersed workers and engineers that he personally taught crude lessons on the improvement of what they use as 'log bridges', and instructed them to build a few within the Jujelei River that connects the Central Woodlands to the Wolfenstein Kingdom.

This would ease the traveling of ordinary merchants coming from Sechua City. It would also increase the number of goods that one could take across the river, as they do not have to worry about drying the goods after getting wet in the river.

After putting extreme effort into helping with the damage that was done to the Wolfenstein Kingdom, Feihren didn't forget that all this was leading to them avenging the fallen soldiers and citizens of the kingdom. Within the same week, Prime Minister Marvin had personally gone to the dwarven village, New Coboro Village, to deal with what Feihren had asked for. Weirdly enough, Old man Mendi and Yeshua suddenly volunteered to help Feihren personally as they asked for permission to go to the Wolfenstein capital themselves.

Leaving the New Coboro Village as it is would not be a problem, as this place was already akin to an impenetrable fortress. Village chief Mendi would also gladly assist Feihren in turning the Wolfenstein Kingdom into something similar to the village in terms of raw defense.

With the plan of bolstering the defense of the Wolfenstein Kingdom already in place, the last thing to do was to arrange the plan of attack. This was a matter that is on the scale of an entire kingdom. As such, Feihren does not want to leave the citizens blind. He had publicly made the announcement of waging war against the Garudia Kingdom. Unexpectedly, the citizens were not against this decree. Instead, they were even glad that the king was planning to take action.

Making this move would establish that the Wolfenstein Kingdom is not something to be bullied.

Although the plan was simple and straightforward, Feihren had proposed that he would scout out the Garudia Kingdom first, all by himself. As long as it is within his power and ability, he would not want any risk befalling any of the soldiers that are going to be deployed within this war. Feihren was not confident enough that he could take on an entire kingdom by himself. This was different from the eastern stronghold and the black market back then.

Every night for the entire week, Feihren traveled back and forth from Wolfenstein to the outskirts of Garudia in order to assess the situation properly. During his scouting, he had taken note that the kingdom itself hadn't taken any action regarding what happened to their initial attack.

The second thing that Feihren had taken into consideration was the size of the Garudia Kingdom. It was not what he had expected. This kingdom spanned four to five times larger than that of the Wolfenstein Kingdom!

It was an oddly shaped area, with a gigantic letter "C" as its structure. One end was touching the edges of the mountain ranges as the other was connected to a thick jungle, with the Jujelei River on
the other side of the forest.

This shape was for the purpose of easily accessing the breeding grounds of the flying beasts on the mountain ranges. The vacant place in the middle of the letter "C" served as some sort of airfield and a runway for these beasts to take flight in an organized manner. It was akin to a gigantic airport.

The capital and the castle were situated at the furthest part of the kingdom.

'The entire open field is about 30 times the size of the diameter of an explosion of my WMD mode Demonic Carbine...' Feihren inwardly considered as he started calculating and clearing the steps in order to have a clean victory. 'The breeding ground huh...' He stared intently at the eastern part of the Garudia Kingdom.
