“Justinian won’t believe it.” I place my hand over the torn fabric of his shirt. “Pregnant women have two heartbeats, and they also look the part.”
“Not all of them,” Alaric replies. “Although I hope he gets confused about having heard or not heard a baby’s heart.”
“Why did you make it look like she cheated with Uncle Fred?”
Alaric flies a large circle around Agia Square. “Frederick condemned himself by using his DNA to hide the curse,” says Alaric.
“So, Grandma thinks he’s my father.”
Alaric flies over farmland, and along a long highway lit by streetlights. The wind blows over my face and through my hair, making my heart soar.
“I don’t know Michaela Augustine very well,” he murmurs. “She seems the type of controlling woman to insist Fred take care of his daughter while forbidding him to reveal their familial connection.”
“That sounds exactly like her.” I turn my head and glance at the convent, which is a blot in the distance, and I wonder what my future will hold. “Do you think she’ll come after us?”
Alaric strokes my hair. “We have more dangerous enemies.”
“Like Justinian,” I say with a groan.
“I was thinking about Empress Theodora,” he replies. “If she commands the Order, I doubt that she will tolerate your heresy.”
“Two ancient vampires?”
Alaric cradles me to his chest. “If a vampire war is on the horizon, we’re going to be the side with the most ancients. And I know exactly how to make that happen.”
