  He hesitated. “Alyssa?”

Lily looked over. “Hey, are you okay?”

“Something is wrong with her.” Brock gripped her knee and all expression melted off her face.

  Brock jerked back. “Alyssa? Baby?”

Her head fell backward, exposing her silky neck, and she opened her mouth. A monotone, low gargle slipped from her lips. Then her head snapped back and she looked Brock directly in the eye.

  “77, 45, 889834—38, 49, 999.”

  “What? Alyssa, baby…”

“The Kaidellen would like to have a word with you.”

  “What the fuck!”

“The Kaidellen will send for you and you will be escorted to Vol.”

  “What... Vol?”

Alyssa’s eyes closed and she slumped forward. Brock easily caught her and shook her gently. “Alyssa! Baby!”

“Brock?” she responded groggily. “What happened?”

“What were those numbers? What… what did you mean the Kaidellen will take us to Vol?”

  “Vol?”

“Are you okay?” Lily asked, taking a seat next to her.

“The Kaidellen?” Alyssa covered her mouth with her hand and tears fell down her cheeks. “I… I’ve put us all in danger!”

“What do you mean by that?” Ulrick asked a bit more harshly than Brock was comfortable with.

“He must have a way to track me. I thought because I didn’t have an advancement that I was safe, but… but they still know where I am.”

“Do you know where this tracking device is?”

Alyssa shuddered. “There... it’s...” She turned around and lifted up her hair to reveal the base of her neck. “It’s usually there.”

“Can we get it out?” Lily asked.

“You have to get rid of me. Throw me off the ship!”

  “What! No!” Brock nearly roared.

“We are not getting rid of anyone or throwing anyone into the void. We can deal with this,” Lily reassured.

  “How?”

“We will see if there is someone who can remove it. The Uyis are very good surgeons. We can drop you off there on our way to find Alberta, Bixom, and Gloria.”

“No! I don’t want to delay you,” Alyssa said.

“You are not delaying us. You are one of us now, we look after our own.”

  “I hate Uyi,” Brock groaned.

“Well, do you have a better idea?”

“No, let’s go to Uyi,” Brock said, squeezing Alyssa’s knee. “Everything will be okay. We will get that thing out of you so that the Developers can’t find us. How the hell they survived that star is beyond me.”

“Hopefully it’s still alive,” Alyssa muttered.

  “Why do you say that?”

“If they were able to Harvest the blast... well...”

  “Fuck,” Brock groaned.

Alyssa leaned her head against Brock’s shoulder and he wrapped an arm around her. He wasn’t about to let her go, especially for some machine. They would face this thing together, whatever should happen.

Where are we?” Gloria asked in a whisper, not because she was worried they would be heard, but because that was all of her voice she could find through her fear. She stared out into the abyss, which was complete and utter blackness. She shivered, though the temperature in the ship was a stable 72.

“Where are the others?” she asked again, but no one responded.

She spun to look at Alberta and Bixom and saw the same fear in their eyes that she felt in hers. Alberta hugged herself; her skinny, long arms made her look fragile. Bixom reached out and scanned the navigation.

“We… I am not sensing anything.”

“Nothing? Must be broken,” Alberta argued.

“It is not broken, there is just... nothing.”

“There never nothing,” Alberta argued again, almost angry.

Gloria stepped next to Bixom and scanned through the navigation system. Her heart sunk. There really was nothing. A void, a huge void. No stars, no planets. Nothing.

“But we… we went through the TIP right after Lily. I don’t...” Gloria’s voice dwindled into a whisper.

  “There must be branch.”

  “A breach?”

Bixom brushed his hand over Gloria’s back and she shrugged him away, despite his warming comfort. Guilt instantly flooded her. The Hilian was only trying to comfort her.

His eyes never left hers, though she caught a glimmer of disappointment in their depths. “Sometimes, if the wormhole is unstable, it can spit something out before its intended destination.”

Gloria shivered and looked back out into the abyss. Crackling filled the Comm. Alberta tried to tune it, but all that came through the system was static and then a high pitched squeak.

“Do not attempt to resist, you are now caught in the tractor beam of the U-lite traders.”

“Do you see anything?” Gloria whispered.

“Who U-lite?” Alberta asked. Spotlights flooded the ship, blinding and disorientating. Though Gloria tried, she could not look up long enough to see what was approaching, or who the U-lite traders were. Fear flooded through her and Bixom’s hand rested on her back. This time, she welcomed his warmth.
