Hawk stood and paced around the room. He lowered his voice. “If you truly want to keep her safe, the best place is for her to be on missions with me. Leaving her all alone and unguarded is a good way to get her killed.”
“Fine,” Blunt conceded. “But will you at least be a little more judicious in the future about the kind of situations you place her in? It’d lead to me not drinking so much.”
“I’ll try to do better, sir.”
“You must. We missed our chance with Petrov, and quite frankly I don’t know when we’ll get another shot like the one we just had. But I’m going to make that priority over everything else you’re doing. Is that understood?”
“Crystal clear, sir.”
“Did you get any actionable intel from Thor?”
“It was a virtual treasure trove of information,” Hawk said. “The most important of which was the hit list assigned to Thor. Kade Parker was at the top of the list, followed by Emily Thornton. You were on there as well about halfway down.”
The sound of Blunt slamming his fist on the table came through the phone. “I thought I’d at least occupy one of the top spots.”
“You’re not powerful enough, sir, according to your former employer. But there are notable names buried in those files. It should make for some interesting reading.”
“The Chamber is going to wish I was at the top of its list when I get done with them,” Blunt said. “Just email me all that information, and I’ll have a look at it.”
“You got it,” Hawk said before he hung up. He sat down at his computer and emailed the information to Blunt.
When Hawk stood and turned around, he was faced directly with Alex. She took his arm, her face beaming.
“We made it,” she said. “And there were a few times over the past week when I wasn’t sure that was going to happen.”
“Me either,” Hawk said. “Most of all, I’m glad you survived too. It’d be too soon. I think we make a great team.”
“Is that all?”
Hawk tried to suppress a smile. “Is there something else you wanted to talk about?”
“Maybe.”
“Yeah. About that kiss—”
Hawk’s phone buzzed, cutting him short. “It’s Blunt. Gotta take this.” He answered his phone. “What did you find? Just keep in mind I hadn’t even gone through the files yet.”
“That much is obvious,” Blunt said. “If you had, you would’ve called me right away.”
“Why? What did you find?”
“It’s confirmed,” Blunt said. “President Michaels is working with The Chamber.”
“And how are we going to address that?”
“We’re going to take him out.”
