“I don’t deny that what you do is important, Brett. You have a gift to capture the beauty in things that others would never find. You have a way with capturing so much without any words. You are never here though. You’re not here for me; you're not here for Hannah. You aren’t here to have to explain why you’re not with us, why you aren’t around all the time like the other fathers. You don’t have to raise a child by yourself. You don’t have to make sure someone else is cared for day in and day out. You don’t have to go to bed alone and cry from loneliness and lack of companionship. I came into this marriage with a partner, and over the last few years, I’ve lost that, and it hurts so much. No matter how I try to bring it up to you, it always ends with us in a fight. I am so sick of fighting, Brett. I’m just done.”

“You’re sure about this?” I asked her.

She nodded. “I am positive, Brett. Please just sign them.”

I lifted the pen and with an exhaled breath, hand hovering over the line that needed my signature, I looked up at Evie one more time. There was pain in her eyes, and I felt it in my soul, but the pen touched the paper anyway, and I signed my name in every place required. Pushing the pen and papers aside after, I grabbed the bottle of wine again and drank from it.

“Is there more wine?” I asked when I drain the bottle. “I think I need it.”

Evie pushed back from the table and brought a new bottle of wine back as well as a glass for me. She filled both our glasses and slid one in my direction. We drank in silence for several minutes until I finally cleared my throat.

  “Where’s Hannah?”

“With my parents, spending the night.”

I nodded. “Do they know, that you want a divorce?”

She shook her head. “No, I haven’t told them yet. I probably will tomorrow when I pick up Hannah. Do you want to tell your parents?”

“Yeah, I’ll them.” I shook my head sadly. “Where did we go wrong, Evie?”

“I don’t know anymore,” she answered honestly. “But I guess now we begin again.”

“I’m old, Evie. How am I supposed to begin again?”

  “You’re thirty-six, Brett. That’s not old.”

“It feels old. Where has the time gone?”

“You were too busy working to notice it passing you by.”

  “Yeah, I guess so.”

“Should we tell Hannah together or do you want me to tell her?”

Hannah. I hadn’t even thought about how she was going to react to this. Slowly, the reality of what had just transpired in our kitchen started to hit me. I was divorced. This was really real. I blinked several times in an effort to clear my head.

“We should both tell her, tomorrow,” I said.

Evie nodded. “I think that would be for the best, if we did it together.”

“I guess I need to find someplace to live. I can move in with my parents temporarily until I do. But first I should pack.” I poured another glass and downed it quickly. I hadn’t eaten in hours, and I was starting to feel the alcohol hit me along with the enormity of the situation. “Will you help me pack?” I asked her.

Evie finished her glass and poured herself a refill, emptying our bottle. She got up and retrieved a third bottle from the fridge. She motioned for me to follow her as she picked up her glass and exited the room. Grabbing my glass, I followed her up the stairs.

Before I reached out bedroom, I stopped to grab two suitcases we had. When I traveled for work, it was usually with my camera bag and my duffel bag, but I will need something larger to be able to take more of my things with me. I dragged the suitcases with me into the room and let them drop with a thud on the floor before unzipping them. Evie sat on the edge of the bed steadily sipping her wine as I started to look around the room, debating where to start. I took a large swallow of the wine and grabbed the bottle from where she had left it on the dresser and filled my glass and then hers.

“Do you remember when we met?” I asked her suddenly. “I was so disappointed you weren't a boy.”

Evie giggled. “I wanted a girlfriend so bad, but I got you instead.”

“Little did we know...” I smiled.

  “Exactly.”

I began to haphazardly toss some of my things into the first suitcase, and Evie got up to fold the clothes and placed them back in the suitcase.

“You’ve always taken care of me, Evie,” I whispered sadly. “Now who will take care of me?”

“You’ll do fine on your own, Brett. We both will.”

“I don’t know if I can do this.”

“You’ve already done it. This is our new normal. It’ll be okay.”

She sounded confident, but I could tell by looking at her that she felt far from it and that she was putting on a brave face and I needed to do the same. “You’re right. It will be okay. Everything happens for a reason, right?”

  “Right.”

  Chapter 6

  Evie

Brett and I had finished the third bottle of wine, and he had gone downstairs to retrieve another bottle. I never normally drank this much, but to get through that night, I needed all the liquid help I could get. When he returned, he poured us both fresh glasses before disappearing into the bathroom to collect some of his toiletries.

Brett had been packing in silence while I sat cross-legged in the middle of the bed. When he came out of the bathroom, I looked over at him and smiled. “Do you remember that first winter formal at college we went to?”

He stopped and looked up at me. “Yeah, I remember. You wore that sparkling ice blue dress and your hair twisted up; you were my snowflake: unique, perfect, and just mine.”

“You brought that beautiful corsage for me to wear.”

“With the white rose. You know that’s why I got them for you on our anniversary every year after that.”

“Remember that time in France that you saw them growing and picked one at that garden and the lady who ran the place started yelling at you in French?”

He chuckled. “I wanted you to have something as you beautiful as you.”

“Except you nearly caused an international incident,” I giggled.

  “Lesson learned,” he smirked.

“I loved traveling with you,” I admitted.

  “You did?”

“Yes. I enjoyed watching you work and connect with people despite the language barriers. Most of all though, I just liked being with you.”

“I loved when you used to come with me too, Evie. We had some good times together.”

“The French Riviera is still the best time I’ve ever spent with you.”

He smiled. “Yeah, that’s my favorite too.” He set his things down and laid down across the bottom of the bed. “Why did you stop traveling with me?”

“It got too hard with Hannah. When she was a baby, it wasn’t too bad, but once she started walking, it just became too overwhelming for me. You would be gone shooting, and I would be in a foreign country where I didn't know the language, trying to keep up with a toddler who just wanted to go and did not in any way want to be confined to a stroller. It was just easier to stay at home, where I had family and friends to help me.”

“I didn’t realize how stressful that must have been.”

“You also stopped asking, even though both of our parents have offered to keep Hannah so we could get away for years now.”

“I didn't think you wanted to go. You seemed so disinterested on that last trip we took together. You left early.”

“I left early because Hannah was two and she had been sick and miserable, and she was making me miserable too. You were working, and I was trapped in a hotel room for three days with no one to talk to. I had to get out of there for my sanity.”

  “I didn’t know that.”

  “You never asked.”

He sighed and sat up, copying the way I sat to face me. “I’m sorry, Evie. I should have been a better husband to you.”

  “It’s all the past now.”

  “Still thoug
h...” He shook his head sadly and got off the bed, resuming his packing. He lifted one of his alma mater’s t-shirts from the drawer and held it up. “We used to have such good times,” he muttered more to himself than to me.

I knew exactly what he was feeling. I thought Brett and I had a love that was going to last a lifetime. We had known each other for so long; he was truly my best friend, or at least he had been. We had drifted apart but would always remain entwined because of our daughter.

Brett sat down heavily on the bed and handed me the shirt he was holding. I lifted it to my face and inhaled his scent on it. He had worn the same cologne for years, and it still elicited the same response from my body as it always had. It was an earthy scent with notes of grapefruit, and whenever I smelled the woodsy and citrus combination, it always reminded me of him.

As I set the shirt down in my lap, Brett leaned in and tentatively pressed his lips to mine. My body reacted immediately, and I found myself kissing him back. His hand slid around my neck to hold my head in place as he deepened the kiss. “Brett,” I whispered against his lips. He started to pull away, but I tugged him back and kissed him again. His hands slid down my arms and to my waist before his fingers went under my shirt and brushed against my skin. His touch lit me on fire, and a moan escaped me.

Brett pulled back, and we stared at each other. Words failed me completely at the moment, but they weren’t needed. Brett stood and pulled me to my feet with him. He lifted my shirt up and over my head. When I didn't stop him, he removed my bra. I heard his quick intake of breath as he drank me in. It had been months since we were last intimate with each other and the way he looked at me reminded me of our first time.

“Do you remember our first time?” Brett asked as if he could read my thoughts.

I blushed. “I was just thinking about it.”

“Me too. You’re so beautiful, Evie.”

  “Brett...”

He shook his head. “No more words. Just feel.” I nodded, and he pulled his shirt over his head and threw it to the floor with mine. Reaching for him, I tugged his belt open, unbuttoned his pants, and pushed them down until they pooled at his ankles. My eyes traveled to the front of his boxer briefs where his erection was outlined and straining to get free. I stroked him lightly, and Brett shuddered.

“Cm’here,” he whispered, pulling me against him. He kissed me fervently and maneuvered me against the wall until I was straddling his leg and the skirt I was wearing began to inch up my thighs. Our kisses became more hurried as we made out like teenagers, impatient but passionate. I groaned when he shifted, and my center rubbed against his thigh. I shifted again and gave myself over to the sensations from the friction as I kneaded against him like a cat in heat.

Brett pushed my skirt up to my waist and ran the pad of his thumb across the front of my panties and over my clit. “You’re soaked, Evie,” he whispered hotly in my ear. He continued to rub my most sensitive spot, and I literally purred as he kissed me.

“Oh god, Brett,” I breathed out. “Please,” I begged.

  “Please what?”

“Please fuck me. Make me come so hard I’ll remember it for days.” I pushed my body into his and Brett kissed me harder, crushing his mouth to mine. When he pulled back, a cocky grin spread across his face as he carefully untangled himself from me. He slid to his knees in front of me and looked up with the devilish grin I’d grown to know and love. His tongue darted out, and he licked the front of my panties, and I felt my knees start to buckle. I placed my hands on his shoulders to steady myself.

  “Evie?”

  “Yes?”

“I’ll buy you a new pair.”

The words swam in my head, and before I could comprehend them, Brett was tearing my panties off my body and licking up my slit. “Oh, god,” I moaned as his tongue circled my clit. “Mmmmm, right there, Brett.” He licked and sucked my clit, working me to a point I couldn’t ever recall reaching before. I felt the waves of pleasure building inside me, and when he reached up to roll my nipple between his fingers, it pushed me over the top. I burst, screaming his name as I came on his tongue.

Brett placed a tender kiss on my inner thigh before he stood. My eyes were closed, my head pressed back against the wall as I came down from the high of the orgasm that had just ripped through me. Brett wrapped an arm around my waist and scooped me up into his arms. I nuzzled my face into his neck, breathing in his scent as I kissed him lightly.

He walked me over and laid me down on our bed and then stretched out beside me. I was feeling bolder than I had in a long time and decided to take charge by climbing on top of him. I rubbed my wet core up and down his length, teasing him as his eyes closed and he groaned.

“Jesus, Evie,” he bit out. “Keeping doing that and I’m going to lose it before I can fuck you properly.”

“Who said anything about proper?” I winked. I took his dick in my hand and pumped him in one hand, using the other to give his balls a squeeze.

“Fuuuuck,” he groaned. He flipped me onto my back in one quick movement, and instinctively I wrapped my legs around his waist, my back arching off the bed, urging him inside me. My hands found his ass and my fingernails dug into his flesh. Brett wrapped an arm around me and pulled me up so our chests were flush and with one swift movement, he slammed into me. I screamed out in ecstasy as he groaned, low and guttural against my ear.

I pulled his face to mine and kissed him as Brett spread my legs wider, stroking in and out of me, harder and deeper. Our kisses were hungry, greedy, as he pumped wildly. He laid me back and rolled us to our sides, and my body bucked with his, and he continued, our need desperate.

I felt another orgasm building, and I stilled as the hot waves of pleasure cascaded through me, calling out over and over. He held me as I rode out every last bit of pleasure and he kissed my forehead tenderly before he rolled me onto my back and started to move inside of me again.

“You feel so good, Evie,” he groaned out.

“Let go, Brett, I know you want to,” I told him. I pulled his face to mine and kissed him as he moved on top of me. I wrapped my legs around him his as hips thrust into me. He moaned my name, and I held him tighter, my heels digging into his ass. He stilled for just a beat before his cock twitched and he finally let go, calling out my name.

I ran my hand up and down his spine as he came down and collapsed over me, both our hearts racing. Brett rolled onto his back and pulled me to his side. We were silent as we held each other with mutual satisfaction.

“Wanna go again?” he whispered into my neck after several minutes passed.

I propped myself up on one elbow and looked down at him at the satisfied smile on his face. I had the same smile. I leaned down to brush my lips over his. “Once more for old times’ sake,” I smirked.

The following morning, I was awakened by sunlight streaming in the windows and Brett’s buzzing phone. My mouth was dry, and my head was pounding as I covered my head with a pillow and groaned. Brett did not stir, and I shoved his shoulder.

He grunted. “Your phone is ringing,” I told him.

“It has voicemail,” he mumbled back.

It blessedly stopped ringing before starting all over again. “Brett,” I said, shaking him. “Answer your phone.”

He got out of bed, and I blushed at the sight of his bare backside, and then I remembered that he signed the divorce papers yesterday as a flood of memories from last night came crashing down on me. I jumped out of bed and dashed into the bathroom where I emptied the contents of my stomach.

I sat back on my heels and cursed the wine that is obviously to blame for my behavior the night before. After having Brett sign the divorce papers, I couldn't believe I slept with him.

Except...there was something different about what happened between us. It was raw and passionate, and I felt him in all of my soul. I felt loved and cherished. It reminded me of the way things used to be, and I wondered if I had made a mistake. I needed to talk to Brett and see where his head was
at because at that moment I thought that maybe we should tear up the papers. Nothing was official until I filed it with the court after all.

Quickly I brushed my teeth and ventured out of the bedroom. My head still felt a little fuzzy, so I headed to the kitchen for water and aspirin. On the way, I passed Brett’s office and paused outside the door to ask him if he would like breakfast. He was at his desk in his chair with his back to me, and I was about to step into the room and announce my presence when I heard his words. I froze on the spot instead.

“Of course, I can head out right away. War doesn't wait for anyone, and neither do these stories. I can book a flight right now,” I heard him say. I ducked out of his view and stood outside his office listening as he continued talking.

“No, there’s nothing here that needs my attention right now. I can give everything to this assignment, don’t worry.” There was a pause and a chuckle before he went on. “Awards are nice, but I just want to share these people's stories, their plights with the world. That is what’s most important. Yeah, I’ll call you back after I arrange the flight details. Talk soon, Steven.”

As he hung up, I hurried to the kitchen and poured the glass of water and shook two aspirin out of the pill bottle. As I was gulping them down, Brett came into the kitchen. He kissed my cheek with a warm smile.

“How do you feel?” he asked.

  “Great,” I answered tightly.

  “Do you have a headache?”

“Nothing this won’t clear up,” I said as I put the pill bottle back in the cupboard.

“Listen, that was CNN on the phone, they have a pretty big assignment, and they want me for it.”

“When are you leaving Brett?” I asked him plainly.

  “Three hours.”

“Are you even going to see Hannah?”

“I thought I could go grab her from your mom’s and take her for a quick breakfast before heading to the airport.”

  “Fine.”

  “Do you want to come?”
