“Welcome to freedom,” Nolan said, taking a deep breath. The city’s grimy air, mixed with the scent of brine, had never smelled so good.
Harlan was watching Nolan from the corner of his eye, but Nolan ignored him, already planning his next steps. Kreslin had left weapons caches all over the city for his hit team, but there was a good chance they’d be quarantined and absorbed by another gargoyle House as soon as Kreslin’s death was discovered. He needed to act fast to set up his hideout with the supplies he’d need to—
“What do we do now?” Garvey rubbed the skin at his throat. Nolan knew exactly how he was feeling; the collar had been around his neck for so long, it was like a part of his body.
He felt naked now without it.
“We should stay together,” Harlan said. “We’re not going to get a welcome reception. Not after what Kreslin made us do.”
Sebastian just stared out at the ocean. Rain dripped from his hair into his eyes. “There’s no place for us here.”
“Nolan, you’ve been with us the longest. It’s your call. We’ll follow where you go.” Garvey looked at him expectantly.
Nolan’s beacons were out there somewhere, blazing in a bright call just for him. Regret welled up in him that he’d brought the hybrids all this way just to leave them here.
“Sorry, guys, but I’ve got some shit to do first.” He forced himself to stop rubbing the naked spot at the base of his throat. No one would ever put a collar back on him. “Maybe when I’m done I can come back, but someone took what’s mine, and I’m going to get her back.”
“Six months,” Garvey said quietly. “Be here, or we’ll come after you.”
Nolan nodded, clasped each of the hybrid’s hands. They’d be okay. This was their chance to stretch their wings and see who they could become. Sebastian needed it most of all; he’d spent too long under Nolan’s shelter. They were brothers to Nolan, but he could no longer lead them.
One of his beacons had walked back into his life, gazing at him with cold blue eyes like Arctic ice, her diamond horns framing her white hair like a halo even though she was no angel. She was somewhere in this city, under Viridios and Onyarai protection, and hiding something Nolan wanted very badly.
A small Topaz, with curling dark hair that was a little too similar to his to be a coincidence.
Nolan stepped into the rain, spread his wings, and launched into the sky, hunting his Diamond and his child.
