When I signed with Bloodhound Books in October 2016 I could never have envisaged the success of this series. In October 2018, two years after the publication of my debut novel, Robbing the Dead and three books into the series, to my amazement I became a UK Amazon Top 10 bestseller, with 100,000 sales behind me, which was wonderful.
Much of this success is due, in no small part, to a wide variety of people. First, the team at Bloodhound for taking a chance on me and for their amazing promotional skills; my editor, Clare Law and proof reader, Ian Skewis and all the book bloggers and online book clubs who work tirelessly to promote authors’ work simply for the love of books. A huge thank you must go to Dr Jacky Collins for her encouragement, support and friendship and also to the readers who have bought the books.
Massive thank yous also go to Alison Baillie and Sarah Torr for being my first readers (in fact, Sarah has a character named after her in this book) and to my partner, Ian Brown, for his invaluable comments and support. Thank you also to my niece, Rachel Abbie, who also allowed me to use her name as a character in the novel, and the student friends of another of my nieces, Louise Pettigrew, especially Alex, Akaash, Deepikaa, Trini, Joanna and Mairi. On police matters, Andy Carlin and Kerry Richardson must get a mention for keeping me right.
My novels deal with contemporary themes and I’m a passionate believer in social justice. During the writing of this book I ran a raffle to try to support Jacqueline Culleton, who started a fund to help Albert Thompson, a child of the Windrush generation, get his much needed cancer treatment. The winner of the competition, Amanda Selway, became a character in the book and she makes a great PC! I would also like to mention Kathleen Sweeney, who works so hard to make the Pensioners’ Wee Xmas Do in Springburn, Glasgow, a success every year – a lovely Irish lady called Mary McPhee won a cameo appearance in this book, so I hope she enjoys being a young librarian for the day.
Lastly, thank you to all my family and friends for their support, in particular my mum; my brother Rob; Kelly Lacey; Jackie McLean and Ally Brady. I’m busy writing Book 5 so hopefully we won’t have too long to wait to see Jim Carruthers and the team again.
