  “Do you think your movie will help?”

  “It won’t, by itself, change the world, but it will help. He’s making deals like this with people all over the world.”

  “Amazing,” Rosie said. “This is fascinating. Who would ever believe it?”

  “No one. Unless it happened to you, no one would believe it. But you were there. You saw with your own eyes. I felt you deserved to know.”

  “And what was the deal? I mean, you agreed to make the movie for him? What do you get out of the deal in return?”

  Devin stood, reached into her front pocket and pulled out a small, blue box. She pushed her chair back and knelt on a bent knee.

  “He promised that when I asked you this question, you’d say ‘yes’.”

  Devin flipped open the box.

  Reflecting the bright morning sunlight, sparkled a solitary diamond.

  Final p.s.

  A breeze whisked through the kitchen window and caused the curtains to flutter. One of the dolls perched on the shelf tilted until it fell and leaned against the other.

  Its eyes shifted into a sideways glance.
