“Thank you for telling us. I know that it must be hard for you to be here, away from your kind.”

“My kind is dead. I have been on my own for a while. That’s why nanny jobs work so well.”

Mona could see that Chris was looking at her differently and it took her a minute to realize that it was attraction that made him look that way. It was a look she had seen before, but it was startling considering that moments before, he was eying her like she was the enemy.

Chris and Jack talked a little bit about the Franklin Organization and what the two of them learned about them. All Jack knew was the information that he was given from Fran.

“You don’t have much to tell, do you?”

“Not really, Chris. My kids are gone, my nanny was held captive, and I have no idea what the hell I am supposed to do. You said that some of your clan was taken?”

Chris was solemn suddenly. The smile that graced his face was gone and the bright blue eyes somehow seemed to cloud over. He was remembering, and in doing so, the pain was palpable. Mona almost didn’t want to hear what he had to say.

She fidgeted in the chair and finally asked for a drink. Her throat was dry, and she needed to get away. Mona didn’t want to hear the tales that were going to come.

After finding some tea in the kitchen and the maid helping her, she held the hot mug in her hand and roamed the halls a little bit. The place was huge, much like Jack’s place was. But unlike Jack’s place, Chris’ house was very old. It was made well and had many more years of life to it, but the style was not modern and new. It felt authentic, and she spent a lot of time walking the hallways lined with old paintings.

Mona stopped in front of one that was old, maybe a hundred years, but it conveyed Chris perfectly.

“Do you like it? I never did like the standard pose back then. It didn’t do well with my face, did it?”

She jumped with the sound of her host’s voice. He snickered at the sound of surprise Mona made, and she hoped her cheeks weren’t getting red.

  “It looks fine.”

  “Indeed.”

Mona looked away. Chris was checking her out, and his words had multiple meanings now.

  “Where is Jack?”

“He’ll be along. Why don’t I give you a tour?”

  “Okay.”

“So, let me ask you, Mona, if Jack doesn’t need you anymore, do you babysit men?”

She sighed out loud and rolled her eyes. Mona couldn’t believe that he had just said that, though his lustful looks from before should have given her a clue.

  Chapter Nine

Jack had just gone to the bathroom for a moment, and when he came back, Chris was gone. It didn't take much to figure out where he had gone. Jack knew that if he found Mona, Chris would be there. The man had at first questioned why he had even brought her, but something had switched in him, and he was looking at Mona in a way that Jack did not want to see. Though he did not have time to worry about why he was feeling that way, Jack's mind kept going back to it.

When he realized that he was gone, Jack went outside to see if he could find them. Mona had gotten uncomfortable after some of the conversation. Jack had felt the stress coming off of her.

Knowing that Chris was going after Mona in such a way, it didn't take long for Jack to flush them out. He was right to believe what he had. Chris was very close to Mona, and he moved forward and pushed some of the curly red tresses out of her face.

Jack didn’t like the sight at all, and there was a pang of jealousy that ran through him. Mona wasn’t his. Not in any way, shape or form, and Jack had far too many things to worry about.

Instead of standing there any longer, he cleared his throat and walked forward so that he wouldn’t have to see any more of it.

“I was wondering where you guys went to. It is getting late, Chris. I think that we are going to go on our way. If you think of anything else that can help us, please give me a call. I am looking for anything at this point.”

Chris agreed, but he did not want them to leave right away. It wasn't Jack’s company that he wanted. It was Mona’s.

“Why don't you guys stay for dinner? It's been a while since I've seen you, Jack, and I hate to see you leave so soon.”

Jack did not want to stay. He wanted to get out of there and get Chris away from Mona. She didn't look to be as interested in him, as he was in her, but if he stayed, he had to sit there and watch Chris flirt. He did not have the temperament for it, with everything else going on in his mind, Jack could really use a way to get rid of some of his pent-up energy. Beating up one of his old friends was not the way to do it.

Mona looked to him for an answer, and he was put on the spot. If Jack said anything but yes, she would wonder why he was trying to get her away from him. Even though that's what he was trying to do.

“Thank you for talking to us, Chris. You’ve been very helpful. I need to get back and make sure that nothing else has come to pass. I am still awaiting some information to come my way. Hell, I would even gladly receive a ransom note. I would pay about anything at this point to get my sons back.”

Chris looked sad for a moment. “I really hope that you have a better outcome than we did. These people, the Franklin Organization, they need to be stopped. I don't know why, but it seems like we're never going to stop running. We will never be able to have normal lives when people out there know about us.”

“And that is why you stay out here in the woods?”

“It seems to be the best way.”

“So, what do they think of all of your people living out here in the middle of the woods like this?”

“The people in town just call us some kind of commune. I have never clarified the situation. They don't ask, and I don't mention it. It seems to work out that way most of the time. But as you know now, even being out here, didn’t help us all that much.”

“Sorry if Chris was a little forward with you. He tends to come on a little strong sometimes.”

“I actually thought that he didn’t like me at first. He gave me the weirdest looks, but I am used to it. People have very different reactions to witches.”

“You can't let him get to you. A lot of us are raised not to trust witches. It has nothing to do with you at all.”

“I know, I was raised the same way. Shifters are bad, vampires are bad, everybody that doesn't look like us is bad. I never did believe that, and nothing has changed.”

There was a silence that came between them, and Jack wanted to ask her what had happened between her and Chris. Anxiety filled him at the idea of the two of them alone. Why was he feeling this way, in the middle of everything?

“So, did he ask you out or something?”

She shook her head and said no. “Is that what you're worried about?”

“I wouldn't say that I'm worried about it, but I am just curious. That's all.”

“Well, he did ask me out, but I told him that it wasn't the right time. There is a lot going on, you know?”

He felt immediately better—about that issue, at least.

“I'm sure that things will settle down eventually.”

  “Yeah.”

“Then you will go out with him?”

“Well, it’s everything going on, plus he isn’t my type either.”

  “What is your type then?”

They were walking to the edge of the forest. Soon, he would turn into his dragon counterpart, and she would ride him back to his house. It was a lot for her the first time, and Jack had loved the way she had clung to him. But he wanted answers first.

She looked down like she was nervous and then shrugged her shoulders. “I don't know. I don't think that I really have a type, I guess. I just like who I like.”

“That just seems like you're trying to talk your way out of it.”

“I wouldn't go that far, but I do think that you can’t just hook up with a person. If you are meant to be together, there will be this chemistry. I didn't have anything like that with Chris. H
e is a nice guy and all, but he's just not for me.”

It was an ambiguous answer. It felt to Jack like she was saying it like that for a reason. Jack wanted to believe that while she may not feel that way about Chris, he was hoping that she felt that way about him. Jack wanted to be her type. He certainly felt some sort of connection and attraction between them. Even in the midst of everything that was going on, it was something that he had not been able to deny. It was almost instantaneous, and Jack wanted to believe that she felt the same way. He had to believe that.

“So, when you find someone that you're compatible with, then what?”

“I don't know. It depends on the guy I guess.”

“Maybe the woman should take the initiative more often. Guys have no idea what's going on in women's minds. They think that we can read them, but we can't. I would almost guarantee that the man would want to kiss you and all you would have to do is make a sign.”

  “Is that so?”

Jack agreed far too quickly, and she giggled about it.

“Well, that is definitely good to know.”

“Yes, I think it is. So, what are you going to do about it?”

They had been going back and forth like it was all just talk. But now things were changing. Jack wanted to push her. If she was waiting for him to make a move, then he had to make the move.

  Chapter Ten

She saw him coming towards her, and there was a split second where Mona felt like she should move. He was obviously messing with her head. She was shaking inside as he moved towards her, but she had to feel his lips on hers. It was all that she could think about, even when it wasn’t proper.

Then he was touching her, and it was like an explosion of pleasure came over her. Just one kiss was sending electricity through her body. She was trembling inside as he pulled her closer. They were standing alone in the woods, nothing but the sounds of insects and reptiles around them. It was creating a symphony backdrop that spoke to Mona. It was a moment of perfection, and she never wanted it to end.

But then something came over her. She got too caught up in the moment, and she pushed him away. Mona had never felt something like that before, and it scared her.

“I don't know what to say.”

“You don't have to say anything, Mona. I don't need you to tell me that there is a connection between us. Like the one you talked about, I can feel it too.”

“But everything is so messed up right now. I don't think that we should be thinking about it.”

“Funny thing is, all I can think about is you straddling me and us running off together. It's kind of hard to think of anything else with what we're about to do.”

It wasn't like she had not been thinking about the same thing. She had.

“We can find another way to get back, if you want.”

“You know that this is the quickest and best way to go. I am not saying that I'm going to do anything that you would not want. I am just saying that it is definitely on my mind. And yes, everything is messed up right now, but that doesn't mean that I want you any less. I don't think that I could ever not want you. That's the problem.”

She could think of a million things that were a bigger problem than that. Right now, his kids were gone, and there was apparently some unforeseen entity of people that wanted to kill her just for existing. The kiss had messed with her head, and she was trying to get her thinking straight again. It was not going to help if all she was thinking about was how he was going to feel when his lips touched her again.

“You can just leave without me if you want.”

“I would never leave you, Mona. Did you just hear what I said?”

Mona could see the need, but also the need for protection in his eyes. His kids were gone, he had no idea where, and that was messing with his head. She could see that he wanted to protect her now too as well.

“It is all going to be okay.”

They hugged for a moment, and Mona finally pulled away. She was feeling more than a moment of comfort, and it was bothering her that she couldn't think straight. Mona had never had this happen to her before.

“Why don't we get going? I think it has just been a long day and we both need some rest. Wouldn't you agree?”

“Sure, if that's what you think.”

She agreed that it was exactly what they both needed, even if Mona wanted more. The very act of going to bed was going to make her wonder what it would be like for him to be next to her. There was nothing that was going to change that train of thought.

She got on the back of Jack and tried not to think about what she was doing. She was straddling him, her most sensitive areas pressed up against him, and she had to wonder what all he could feel. Could he feel how hot she was down there? It was hard to focus on anything else when Mona's mind was not listening to her. It was coming up with things that it shouldn't be, and the result was that she was now focused on the wrong thing.

Instead of focusing on what she could do to help the situation and to help Jack, now all she was worried about was how good he felt when he moved. Each beat of his wings made her press up against him a little bit more. After doing that repeatedly, it became too much.

Before she knew it was happening, Mona's body started to shake. She told Jack rather insistently that they were going to have to touch down for a few moments. She was not going to be able to go on, and the embarrassment of being so aroused was something that she did not want to admit to. He did not need to know what he was doing to her.

Jack did as she asked, but it was too late. As he was landing, Mona was having one of the best orgasms of her life. She was just that turned on, and it had only been one kiss. If only one kiss could do that, she had to wonder what more he could do to her. It was scary to even think about it. She had a feeling that if he wanted to, he would have her wrapped around his finger in no time.

Mona scrambled off of him as quickly as possible when they finally landed. She wanted to get off of him so that she could catch her breath and hopefully get herself together. It was hard to imagine that something so innocent could create such chaos inside of her.

  “Are you alright?”

He was walking towards her, concerned, and that just made it worse. She wanted to laugh, maybe cry, all at the same time. She had never experienced anything like that.

“Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. I just, I just need a minute.”

“Are you sure? Your face is all red, and it looks like you’re having trouble breathing.”

That just made her face a little redder. Her hands were shaking, and he would know what happened, what she had done, soon enough. Or rather what he had done.

He started to walk towards her again, and Mona put her hand up to stop him. “No, really. I just need to catch my breath for a second.”

Jack looked confused, and she had no need to fix that for him. It did not matter to her that he didn't understand what was going on. She did. And that was enough.

“Are you sure you're okay?” The concern was increasing with her frustration. Jack just had no idea.

  “Yes!”

  “I just don't understand what's going on.”

  How could he not know?

“I just need a minute. I am not used to flying, remember? I am a witch. I can float a little bit and sometimes I can do a bit more, but we certainly don't fly.”

He took her at her word, and she was thankful for it.

He waited patiently for her to finally stand up. Her legs were shaking, and it really was a very substantial orgasm. To do it mid-air, on the back of a dragon, was surreal.

The silence stretched out before them, and he wanted to know if she was better.

“Yeah, I'm going to be fine. Really. That just caught me off guard is all.”

“Well, I don't know what is going on exactly. But whenever you’re ready, I'll be ready too.”

He stalked off, and Mona was still shaking for a little bit. She did not know what had come over her and she certainly did not want to explain it to
him. How could she?

“What am I going to do with you?”

“I have no idea what you mean by that.”

  “Don't you?”

  “No, I don't.”

“Well, let's see. Your heart is racing, you’re flushed, your hands are shaking—basically, there is a lot going on here. If I didn't know any better, I would think that you had just had an orgasm.”

That was more than she could handle saying out loud. He said it with such a straight face, and as soon as she looked at him, she knew that he knew. There was no way that she could hide it.

“Well, Jack, you didn't have to say it out loud. I was trying to keep it on the downlow.”

“I have really good senses, Mona. I can’t help but know.”

Mona shook her head and tried to imagine what that actually meant. What had changed in her body that he could now tell the difference?

She was afraid that he could smell her arousal. To be fair, it had been quite a big one.

Unable to talk about it any longer, she did her best to cover up the bother that she felt about the conversation. “Are you ready to go?”

“I am ready to do so many things. But yes, I'm ready to fly us back home. If that's all I can get.”

She did not add anything to that. What was there to say?

Sliding back on top of him, she instantly felt the need run through her again. It was not just because she had experienced such a powerful orgasm before; it was more than that. She was afraid that it was going to happen again.

Not even a few minutes into the flight, she could already feel that need running through her again. It was taking her breath away, and before long, Mona was pressing her body up against him and hanging on tight. There was no way that she could ask him to stop again, so she just had to ride it out.

By the time they had landed, there was no way that she could do much more than sit on the ground for a few moments. It was embarrassing. She didn't want to think about what it looked like, but that's all she could do. It had just been too much, and her body was taking a lot longer than normal for her to pull herself together. What the hell had just happened?
