by Kate Genet

‘He can be my doggy for always?’ she asked.

‘For the rest of his life,’ Rodger said, and he reached out to slip his hand into his wife’s. ‘We’d be very glad if you could keep taking such good care of him.’

‘I will!’ Rose said and buried her face in his fur. Pilot twisted around and licked her ear. She squealed and turned to look at Claire.

‘He’s my doggy now for keeps, Auntie Claire,’ she said.

‘Yes,’ Claire said. ‘He sure is, Rose. He sure is.’

‘You and me, we can look after him together, if you like.’ Rose looked up at her, face serious.

Claire crouched down to pat the dog. ‘You know what, Rose?’ she said, taking in the twin pairs of shining eyes, dog’s and girl’s.

‘I think I’d like that very much.’
