As our kiss grows more frantic, he hooks his fingers under the strap of my bra, tugging it down my arm. He breaks our kiss and places a knee on the sofa beside us, crouching slightly to wrap his lips around the nipple he frees as he pulls down my cups. His hands reach behind me to unfasten my clasp before he finally wrestles my blouse and bra off and tosses them to the side. His hands return to knead my breasts only briefly as he continues lashing at my nipple, then they lower to the zipper on my skirt.

While he works to slide my skirt and panties down my legs, I claw at his t-shirt and jerk it over his head. As soon as I step out of my skirt, still in my heels, Cooper gently pushes me back onto the sofa. “Right here?” I moan, reaching down to touch my slit briefly and get myself ready for him.

“Right here,” he confirms as he unbuckles his jeans and quickly strips the rest of his clothes off. When he stands up in front of me, his hard cock throbs in anticipation. It stands at attention between us, begging me to touch it, lick it, devour it.

I lean forward, but before I can get my hands or lips on Cooper, he leans down and guides my shoulders back to the sofa. I spread my legs eagerly, welcoming him back after his long absence. When I hook my heels behind his thighs we crash together, our lips seeking each other as I feel his blunt tip drag against my slick entrance, preparing himself to thrust.

“Stop teasing me,” I gasp as Cooper’s hips rise and he drags the length of his cock up and down my pelvic bone, putting pressure on my clit.

“Are you ready for me?” I can feel his smile against my lips.

“Yes, god yes!” I cry as his cock drags down my lower belly once again, then, with one long, slow stroke he buries himself inside me. We gasp and shudder against each other, both of us overwhelmed with the sensation.

I wrap my arms around Cooper’s shoulders and tighten my legs around him, holding him still inside of me. We lay together like that for what feels like an eternity, our lips locked together as we grind against each other, shifting only our hips.

I finally break our kiss when I feel the pressure of my orgasm building in my lower belly, the constant friction of Cooper’s body and his gentle rocking motion sending me over the edge.

My nails drag across his back and I bite down on his shoulder, moaning in pleasure as the spasms rock through my body. As soon as my trembling stops and I relax my legs still locking Cooper against me, he pulls back and withdraws, leaving his slick cock jutting out in the air above me.

“Roll over,” he growls. “You know what I want.”

“Oh yeah,” I agree with a wicked smile as I turn over, resting my head on the arm of the sofa and bracing myself as I pull my knees up to give Cooper the best angle possible. I moan again as his heavy palm slaps my ass, before he lines himself up behind me and slides back inside.

“Are you ready, baby?” Cooper growls as he grabs my hips, forcefully grinding himself against me until I can feel his cock deep inside my belly.

“Harder, Cooper!” I cry as his hips begin to move. His hard abs and thighs slam into me with such force I have to grab my breasts to keep them from bouncing into my face.

“I’ve got you, baby,” Cooper grunts as one hand lets go of my hip to reach down and cover my tit. He squeezes it fiercely as his tempo increases, his long thrusts stretching my pussy in ways only Cooper has ever managed.

“Oh shit, don’t stop, I’m…I’m coming again!” I sob as Cooper’s cock swells impossibly, just before he pulls free and I feel the first hot jet of his cum spray across my ass. I reach down between my legs to tease the last of my orgasm from my swollen clit as he covers my back with his seed. When I start to laugh, Cooper steps back from me, still holding his cock in his hand.

“Liz, you okay?” he asks me in concern as my snorts and giggles continue.

“Yes, yes, I’m fine. Can you get me a towel? You cum like a horse, you know that?”

With a grin, Cooper runs into the kitchen to get some paper towels. “Let’s run through the shower and then take this to the bedroom,” he winks at me as he helps me clean up. “Now that you’ve let me back in, I don’t have any plans to leave.”

As Cooper and I lay together in bed spooning and recovering from our best round of sex yet, he covers my hand with his and then rubs his thumb over my wedding band.

“It’s about time we finally consummated this shit,” he says with a kiss to my cheek. “Miles has been giving me hell for not being able to bed my wife.”

“I guess if we’re married, then the least we can do is enjoy having insanely good sex together.”

“God, yes,” Cooper grunts. “In fact, I already need you again,” he says before he rolls me to my back and climbs on top of me. I gladly spread my thighs to make room for his hips to lower between them while his lips make their way down the side of my neck.

“Once everything gets resolved and Ruby is ours,” he says between kisses. “I promise I’m going to take you on a honeymoon. Far away on some tropical island.”

“Mmm,” I moan. “That sounds nice. But I can’t take much time off work.”

Cooper’s lips freeze on my throat before he lifts his head briefly, grabbing both my hands and pinning them over my head. A moment later he resumes sucking on my neck until I’m a squirming mess underneath him.

“You’ll take off as much time for our honeymoon as your husband says.”

“Is that right?” I ask with a giggle. “Guess we’ll see. I think you’ll find that I’m a very disobedient wife.”

“Don’t worry,” Cooper says before his lips return to mine for a quick kiss. “I’ll fuck you into submission.”

“Give it your best shot, Mr. Cummings.”

“Oh, I plan to, Mrs. Cummings.”

If I thought the sex was good before I married Cooper, I had another thing coming. I’ll testify anywhere, anytime, that married sex is even better. Amazingly, as many times as Cooper has taken me since last night, I’m not even sore. Other than the tremble in my thighs that makes me wobble like a newborn colt every time I try to go to the bathroom, Cooper’s been able to keep me so wet I haven’t been uncomfortable at all.

When he finally collapses on top of me, both of us gasping and sweating, his hand seeks out mine and our fingers intertwine. I can feel Cooper rubbing the wedding band on my finger again.

“I’m so glad you agreed to marry me,” Cooper whispers. “Ever since Avalon, the only time I feel almost normal is when I’m with you. Having you with me has been a godsend.”

“I’m glad to be here with you, too,” I reply as I hold him close to me, cradling his head to my breast. “You and I together can make things better. Not just for that little girl, but for each other. We’ll get through this, Cooper. I know we will.”

Liz and I wait for over an hour in the lobby of the social services office before our case worker finally calls us back. My nerves were on edge as it was, making me feel sick to my stomach. The sixty minutes of waiting didn’t help at all.

“I’m so sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. and Mrs. Cummings,” Janet, our social worker, says when she takes us into the conference room, and we all have a seat. Thankfully, she seems friendlier than the woman who did the home inspection.

“It’s no problem,” Liz responds since my throat is too dry to comment. “We appreciate you meeting with us for an update.”

“Of course,” Janet says. “And unfortunately, I have some bad news.”

“Bad news?” I repeat, making sure I heard her correctly.

“Yes. I know you had your hearts set on adopting Ruby Higgins, so I’m very sorry to inform you that she’s ineligible for adoption consideration at this time.”

“What does that mean? Do we have to wait a few months or something?” I snap. Liz reaches over to give my hand a squeeze, reminding me to keep my temper in check. “Or did we not meet the qualifications? My wife and I have clean criminal r
ecords and make plenty of money. Our house is spotless! Couldn’t we foster her first or something like a trial run? We can be good parents to her if you’ll just give us the chance!”

“No, no, it’s not that you aren’t qualified or that we don’t believe you would make amazing parents,” she says with a small smile. “The problem is that there’s a biological father listed on Ruby’s birth certificate. He’ll have to be found and informed before our office goes any further.”

“She has a father?” I repeat in confusion. “Who is he? Where the hell has he been?” And the question I don’t say aloud but only to myself is Why didn’t Jenna ask him for child support to help her out financially? For some reason, she would rather dance naked for cash than ask for him to step in or step up and be a father to Ruby. He must be an awful man if she didn’t want her daughter to be around him.

“I can’t personally provide you with his full name.” Janet looks between me and Liz with her hands clasped in front of her on her desk. “But that’s not to say you couldn’t ask for a copy of her birth certificate at the Register of Deeds in Horry County, South Carolina where she was born to find out for yourself. And as for why he hasn’t been a part of Ruby’s life, well, that’s a question only Miss Higgins could answer.”

“I can’t believe this,” I say as I dig my elbows into the top of my thighs. Staring down at the floor, I spear my fingers through my hair and give it a harsh tug. After all I’ve done, convincing Liz to marry me, having her move all of her things into my place, filling out a Bible-sized stack of documents, reading hundreds of pages of the adoption course, all of it was for nothing!

“Again, I really am sorry,” Janet says softly. “It may take a few weeks for our office to locate her father; and during that time, we could see if a judge would grant you temporary foster privileges.”

Nodding, I lift my head to look at her again. “Yes, we want to do that,” I agree glumly. It’s not much but it’s something.

“I just need you to fill out this form,” she replies while placing a thick document on the desk in front of us. “There is still a small chance for you to adopt Ruby in a few months,” she goes on to say. “Her father could decline to accept parental responsibilities for her.”

“What does that mean?” Liz asks since she deals with criminal and not custody law.

“Not all fathers want to be fathers,” Janet responds sadly.

“So, you’re saying that if we can track down Ruby’s biological father and he says that he doesn’t want her, then Ruby would be put up for adoption?” Liz asks, her lawyer mind working even faster than mine.

“That’s correct,” Janet agrees. “And you’ll be at the top of the list.”

“Let’s do it,” I tell Liz as I shoot up to my feet and hold out my hand to her. “Thank you, Janet. I hope we’ll be back soon with a better outcome.”

“Me too,” she agrees as she shakes my hand.

Grabbing up the foster application papers, I have my phone out in my other hand and up to my ear calling Reece before Liz and I make it out to the parking lot.

  “What’s going on?” he answers.

First and foremost, I ask the most important question, “Any updates on our bomber?”

“No,” he answers with a frustrated sigh. “I’m still working on locating family and associates of the Russians to see if anyone has been stateside recently. So far, I’ve got nothing, which means they may have been smuggled in. The good news is that we’re all coming back to town tomorrow. The vacation’s been nice, but this house is way too fucking crowded.”

“Yeah, I bet,” I say since there are a lot of Kings, old ladies and kids running around. Even I can hear some of the ruckus in the background.

“We’ll have to all watch our backs, but as long as it’s just one asshole and we stay alert, he shouldn’t be able to get the drop on us again. I’ll just breathe a little easier when we have an actual photo of the fucker.”

“Same,” I agree as I glance around the parking lot as we walk toward our cars, looking for anyone suspicious. Reece seems to think that since the attacks were on Savage Kings’ establishments, our assailant doesn’t know individual names; therefore, he won’t hit any residences. Still, I sleep a little easier at night thanks to the top-of-the-line security equipment Reece installed years ago at my house.

“So the other reason I was calling,” I start. “Any chance you can find a birth certificate for me and then locate the father?”

“In my sleep without any hands,” Reece brags.

“Good. I need to know where to find Ruby Higgins’ father. Her date of birth is March eleventh of this year. Jenna Higgins was her mother.”

“I’ll send you his name and address before lunchtime,” he promises.

“Thanks, Reece,” I tell him before I end the call.

“You have someone who thinks he can track him down?” Liz asks when we come to a stop next to her car.

“Yes. He’ll find him, and soon,” I agree. “Are you up for a road trip this afternoon, assuming he’s within driving distance?”

She nods. “Give me at least three hours in the office to continue my court cases and speak to appointments by phone.”

“You don’t have to come with me if you don’t want to,” I tell her.

“I want to,” she says. “Besides, someone needs to make sure you don’t lose your temper on this guy.”

“I’m as cool as a cucumber,” I reply.

“Yeah, right,” Liz mutters with a roll of her green eyes. Stretching up on her toes, she places a swift kiss on my lips and says, “Call or text when you’re ready. You can come by the office and we’ll take my car.”

“Deal,” I agree before stealing another kiss, this one longer and with tongue.

“Mmm,” she moans against my lips before her palms are pressing on my chest, pushing me away. “Don’t start that or I’ll be even later for work.”

“Well, if you’re already late…” I say as I lick my lips just to get another taste of her.

“Bye, Cooper,” she says with a smile before she turns around and slips into the driver’s seat of her car.

  Chapter Fifteen

  Elizabeth

While it will probably take the Department of Social Services days or even weeks to track down Theodore Fuller, Cooper’s friend, Reece, is able to find a man by that name who lives on the other side of the state within a few hours.

Since this is the type of thing that deserves a face-to-face visit, I offered to drive Cooper to Asheville even though I’m missing work yet again, getting behind on trial preparation and pissing off the partners. He’s wound so tight after finding out that we can’t adopt Ruby, I worry he could completely snap after talking to this guy.

Last night we got into town after midnight, so we crashed at a hotel for a few hours rather than wake the man up in the middle of the night, much to Cooper’s disappointment. I was so tired I fell asleep almost instantly while Cooper sat down to watch television and unwind. When I woke up in the morning, he was still sitting in the chair, one leg twitching anxiously. He had never even gotten undressed and didn’t appear to have slept at all. I took a quick shower and got ready as quickly as possible, becoming even more worried about his mental state as I watched him pace around the room. Within an hour, we were back on the road.

“Are you sure this is the address?” I ask as the GPS’s robotic voice directs us to turn into a wealthy neighborhood with enormous houses that probably cost close to a million each.

“Maybe Reece gave us the address for the wrong Theodore Fuller. The real one could easily live out of state and was only on the coast visiting,” Cooper remarks, thinking the same thing I am. If Ruby’s father is this rich, why wouldn’t Jenna just make a call and ask him for child support?

“Well, we drove all the way here and I’ve got the day off,” I say. “Might as well stop in and check with this Theodore.”

“Yeah,” Cooper says with his brow furrowed in concern.

I know how important it is for us to adopt Ruby, and after finding out that Cooper never slept with her mother, I’m feeling better about becoming one of her adoptive parents. Excited even, and disappointed that it fell through. Janet called yesterday afternoon before she left the office for the day and said that within a few days, a judge will have decided whether or not we’ll be approved to temporarily foster her until everything with her biological father is resolved.

The house in the cul-de-sac is apparently our destination based on the GPS, so I pull into the semi-circular driveway and put the car in park.

“You ready?” I ask Cooper as he looks out the window at the two-story brick and stone home. Several lights are on through the place, telling us someone must be inside. Theodore is probably getting ready to go to work. That’s why we wanted to get here early, to catch him before he left.

“Yeah, let’s get this over with,” he says with an exhale before he opens his door and eases out.

Once I kill the engine, I hurry to catch up with him on the sidewalk leading to the front porch.

Cooper presses his finger to the doorbell, and I can hear the chimes inside.

A moment later, a teenage boy who looks about fifteen or sixteen with sandy-red hair opens the door and eyes Cooper and I suspiciously. “Can I help you?” he asks.

Oh jeez, could he be Ruby’s father? He doesn’t look old enough to vote!

“We’re looking for Theodore Fuller,” Cooper says.

“I’m Theodore,” the boy says, making my jaw drop. But then he says, “You may be looking for my father, though, since I’m the second.”

“Ah, yeah,” Cooper replies with a sigh of the same relief I’m feeling. “Is your father home?”
