  4. With right sides together, sew the bottom of the bottle carrier together. Press the seam allowances open. Topstitch the seam allowances ¼˝ from the seam to hold in place.

  5. With right sides together, sew one side of the bottle carrier together. Press the seam allowances open.

  6. Sew the other side of the bottle carrier and press the seam allowances open.

Carefully turn right side out. The point where the bottom of the bottle carrier meets the side of the bottle carrier is the weakest point and can rip if you are not careful. (Ask me how I know. …)

  7. Press to finish. Trim—never pull—any loose threads.

  8. On the end of one strap, place 2 D-rings. Fold the strap back 1½˝. Boxstitch to secure.

  9. Loop the other strap through the 2 D-rings and adjust the length.

  MAGNOLIA

Finished magnolia flower: Large: 8½˝ wide × 4˝ tall, Small: 5¼˝ wide × 2˝ tall

  MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES

  NOTE

If you are using unwashed kraft-tex, wash it a few times with like-colored articles—the more times you wash it, the softer it becomes. Be sure to wash it with other items to help agitate the kraft-tex.

  MATERIALS

  kraft-tex (by C&T Publishing): ⅓ yard

Floral stem wire, 26-gauge: 1 package

Floral tape, ½˝ wide: 1 roll

  TOOLS

  Diagonal cutters

  Stiletto

  CUTTING

  kraft-tex

•Using prewashed kraft-tex, cut an assortment of petal shapes using the Magnolia Flower petal patterns (sheet P1).

The large magnolia flower sample uses 6 extra-large petals and 6 large petals.

The small magnolia flower sample uses 6 medium petals and 6 small petals.

Don’t be concerned that you follow the petal patterns precisely. Nature is very forgiving! Once cut, go ahead and crumple them up—this helps soften the kraft-tex. When you’ve completed the magnolia, you can then bend and shape the kraft-tex to your liking.

  Assembly Instructions

  1. Pinch the pointed bottom end of each petal to create a fold. Punch a pair of holes about ½˝ from the bottom using the stiletto.

  2. Insert one piece of the floral stem wire through these holes and center the petal on the wire.

  3. Bend the wire down and away from the petal. Holding one side of the wire, tightly wrap the wire around the base of the petal. Keep as many wraps of the wire on the base of the petal as possible—this will stabilize the petal.

  4. Twist the wires together until you reach the end. Don’t worry about the finished length of the wire.

  5. Using about 6˝ of the floral tape, tightly wrap the petal and floral wire, beginning just above where the wire enters the petal and overlapping each wrap of the floral tape by about ¼˝ so that it spirals down the length of the “stem.”

  6. Wrap the floral tape so about 4˝ of the wire “stem” is covered. Repeat for each petal. Floral tape is a weird medium—it’s slightly tacky on both sides, but not like glue. This tackiness lets it adhere to itself and the wire. Don’t be surprised if it’s a little difficult to work with at first.

  tip

A quick trick: Once you begin the wrap of the tape, grasp the petal at the base with one hand and keep your other hand on the tape, leading it down the wire as you turn the petal.

  7. Once each petal is prepared, bring the smaller petals together to form a flower shape. Twist the individual wire stems together to create 1 stem.

  8. Then bring the larger petals into play. Place them as close to the base of the smaller petals as possible, twisting their stems to merge with the main stem.

  9. Once all are placed, bind the petals together with floral tape, beginning as close to the flower as possible where the stem is formed.

  10. Before reaching the end of the stem, decide on the length of the stem and cut the ends of the floral wires to this length. Continue wrapping until you have enclosed the ends.

  About Russell Conte

For Russell Conte, the act of taking a yard or two (or ten!) of cloth and cajoling it into a garment, a quilt, or a shoe is as close to alchemy as you can get. And teaching folks how to master it themselves—to be a part of someone’s exploration of their own creative genius—is the best.
