“I can’t believe I fell asleep,” I said.
“I can’t believe I haven’t,” Caleb said.
My hand slid down my dry clothes. It felt so good to not be soaked to the bone but still, I would have liked a shower to actually feel clean.
“What’s the plan here?” I asked.
“Robby says we can stay as long as we like,” Caleb said. “There’s more than enough food and water. He says they’re just waiting here until help comes.” Caleb sat up. “We can do whatever you want to do.”
I swallowed hard as I stroked the soft fur behind Clover’s ear. “If you think we’re safe here, we should stay.”
“I think we are,” Caleb said. “They seem like good, normal people. We just don’t let our guard down.”
“Okay,” I said.
“Get some more sleep,” Caleb said. “You were only out for a couple hours.”
My eyes widened. “Hours?”
“I’m guessing. I don’t have a clock,” Caleb said.
I laid down on my side with my back to Caleb. Clover curled up behind my legs, shifting back and forth slightly before she settled into a comfortable position.
I was afraid to let even an ounce of hope enter my mind but maybe things were looking up. Maybe help would actually come.
There was a roof over our head, food, and water to keep us alive. The only thing we could do was wait. Caleb and I already knew what kind of world was outside the store doors and it wasn’t something I was excited to get back into.
We’d stay. We’d keep fighting for our lives because it was all we could do.
It wasn’t like everyone everywhere could be struggling. Somewhere there was hope. Somewhere there was life again, even if it would be different.
I was scared… frightened… devastated but I wouldn’t let my mind go to those places. Not yet. Not now. Caleb and I still had work to do.
Even if it would be easier inside the store, we still had to fight for our lives. It’s what our family and friends would have wanted. It’s what we would do.
We would make it no matter what.
