“Five Stars!” someone shouted. Other voices joined in. Five Stars! Five Stars! Five Stars!”
Adele sought the officer that had called her a bitch and stared him in the eye for a long moment. Then she shook her head. “Coline!”
“Yes mother?”
Adele did not look at her, but kept staring at the prisoners. “I want these men out of Saonne in one hour, and out of the Duchy by nightfall,” she said. Her voice rang like a bell, louder than the chorus of the prisoners. Voices died out as she paced in front of them. “Have them moving and escort them to the Pass of Lo. Make sure they all are on their way back to their master before the sun goes down.”
Coline stared at her, and then a cruel grin spread over her lips. “As you command, mother.”
The prisoners were silent.
“Let’s see how much better they like their Hierophant’s pity,” the Duchess said.
