“We’re hoping in light of this news, you both will reconsider your resignations,” Kline added.
“What about Cunningham?” Catherine asked, her voice cool and her expression neutral.
“After a long meeting during which Legal got involved, it was decided that it was time for Cunningham to step down. His views and values toward women do not represent Berkley-Adams. So, what do you say?” Graham said.
“If we come back, Catherine gets a raise. Right now, she’s being paid at the low end of the salary range. If she were a man, her salary would be higher,” I said.
“Ms. Brown’s salary was based on her lack of management experience, not her gender,” Kline was quick to point out.
“She’s passed her probation period and her track record shows she’s a tremendous asset to Berkley-Adams. Ms. Brown’s pay should reflect it,” I said.
Kline and Graham looked at each other. Graham nodded.
“We can increase her salary by four percent,” Kline said.
“Six,” I countered.
“Five percent and we’ll add a yearly performance bonus to both of your salaries based on the number of accounts you bring in,” Kline said.
“Catherine?” I asked.
“We’ll both be reinstated with no breaks in service?” she said.
“Yes. This last week will be recorded as paid vacation,” Graham said.
“Then I accept your offer,” she said.
“Zach?” Kline asked.
“You have a deal. We’ll be here bright and early on Monday morning,” I said as I stood. “Now if you’ll excuse us, unless there’s anything else you gentlemen need that can’t wait until Monday, my wife and I are in the middle of moving.”
“Wife? You’re married?” Graham said, his astonishment clear.
“As of last Saturday,” I confirmed.
“Congratulations! Go ahead. Get out of here. Everything else can wait until Monday. I’m sure you have a lot to do,” Graham said as he shook both of our hands again.
I motioned Catherine towards the door. Before turning to follow her, Kline winked at me. I shot him a grin.
As I followed her out of the office, I wondered. Should I tell Catherine that Malachi Kline was my maternal uncle and a charter member of the Iron Riders MC? That I’d known my uncle wouldn’t rest until he found a way to get both of us back on the payroll?
I glanced at her beside me. She beamed with joy, relief, and barely contained excitement as we entered the elevator.
Nah! I’ll wait until after our tenth wedding anniversary.
