Prologue
Donovan
Ten Years Ago
“Tessa?” I called out to her. My deep voice echoed in the darkened room, not absorbed by the bed draped in red, silk sheets. “Come to me, Tessa.”
Like she’d been listening for my call, she pulled back the sheer, black curtain, stepping into the room. She wore nothing but a white, lacy thong and matching bra, giving me a full view of her flat stomach and curvy hips. Her breasts threatened to spill over the cups of her bra, and her dark eyes burned with passion while her lips parted with her heavy breathing.
“I’ve been waiting for you, Tessa,” I cooed, stepping up to her and pulling her against my chest where our lips found one another’s. My hand cupped her cheek, deepening the kiss as I walked her backward.
The candles burning on the bedside tables flickered as we fell onto the bed, wrapped up in one another.
I got to my knees, sliding my fingers beneath the waistband of her panties. “I was afraid you were going to stand me up, baby.”
“You know I wouldn’t miss this for the world. It’s our anniversary.” Her soft hands landed on mine, urging me to push her panties down her long, sexy legs.
A grin spread across my face as the thin material slid below her knees, revealing her blushing core to me. “One month exactly.” I tossed the lace to the floor. “Tell me, how would you like to celebrate?” My hands softly landed on her parted knees, slowly sliding up the inside of her thighs to the junction between her legs. Using my thumbs, I parted her lips to see her glistening folds.
She smiled, cheeks burning with excitement. “I think you know what I want to do with our time. We don’t have long—we never do.” She pushed herself up and reached behind her, unclasping her bra. Her big breasts spilled from the cups as she dropped her bra on the floor.
I licked my lips, more than ready to take from her, and pushed my boxers down my hips. “Are you sure you want to give yourself to me? We’ve only been seeing one another for a month.”
She flung herself back, arms landing above her head as her blue eyes locked on mine. “I’ve never wanted anything more, Donovan.”
A half-smirk pulled at my lips as I lowered myself to her. As my mouth found hers, my aching dick twitched with excitement, ready to push forward and claim what was rightfully mine—what I so desperately needed.
My hands massaged her thighs, working their way up her hips to her breasts. When I rolled her nipple between my fingers, she let out a soft moan that filled the room. My dick pressed against her opening, and I rolled my hips, allowing myself to glide between her slick folds.
“Donovan, please. I have to go soon,” she begged, wanting more of me.
I pulled back and slammed into her, filling her completely. Her muscles tightened around me as she let out a loud, appreciative moan. I held her hips, pulling her into my thrusts. My hands squeezed, causing bits of naked flesh to bubble up between my fingers. I closed my eyes and memories washed over me: the heat, the smoke, crimson lips, and perfectly smooth skin, her words. “I’ll always love you, Donovan.”
The memories were the only way I could get through it. The only way I could survive. They kept the flicker of hope alive in my cold, dead heart. Futile as it was to hope we’d be reunited someday. For all I knew, her soul had been snuffed out. Not like he’d tell me he did it. The one who betrayed him. But if he had, I’d know. I’d feel it. So, hope sprung eternal.
My release rose to the surface, forcing me to double my speed until I’d drained myself of every drop. When I opened my eyes, eyes I knew were blazing red, Tessa lay lifeless in front of me: eyes closed and blue lips parted as if she’d been gasping for air.
I withdrew and released my hold on her as I stood from the bed, causing her limp legs to collapse to either side. Remorsefully, I tugged the sheet up over her cooling body and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I’m sorry, Tessa. Just know I didn’t have a choice.”
Olivia
Present Day
“Liv, please!” Anita, my best friend for the last ten years, whined into the phone. “All you have to do is show up and get me. We won’t stay. I promise! I drank too much, and my parents will kill me if they find out. Please!” Her whine was slightly slurred this time around.
“I really hate you right now. You know that, right?” I grumbled as I kicked my floral bedsheets down my legs and shuffled to my closet to grab something that wasn’t sleeping attire.
“No, you don’t, or you wouldn’t be digging through your closet right now to get your clothes on,” she retorted, her words strung together too quickly as she let out a hiccup and a giggle.
“I’ll be there in ten minutes,” I sighed. She let out another short giggle before the phone went dead. I frowned down at it and shook my head before tossing it onto the bed. Grabbing my jeans, I hastily stepped out of my red plaid pajama bottoms, tossing them beside my phone as I pulled on my jeans. I figured my white tank top was fine, but I made sure to grab a gray zip-up sweater. I had no intentions of staying anyway. I never did and never would.
Truth be told, I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of high school. Being the twerp had never really gotten me anywhere in life, unless good grades and a reputation for being a loser counted. Anita, on the other hand, had it going on. Even if she wasn’t Miss P
opularity, she was the life of the party, and that basically equated to the same thing. Her dark skin, long legs, D-cup breasts, and wild child attitude made her the object of most of our classmates’ affections, chicks included.
Still grumbling, I snatched my car keys off the dresser and went outside to where Old Faithful waited. My mom had given me her old Buick when I’d turned sixteen. That thing took a hit and kept on ticking. Literally. She’d been rear ended twice in it, and I’d hit a deer once. To say she was a little banged up was an understatement.
Maneuvering the car out into the street, I set out to go pick up my drunk friend. It was so dark out that without my headlights, I wouldn’t have been able to see two feet in front of me. A glance at the clock told me it was well after one in the morning.
“Christ, Anita,” I muttered, accelerating. I hated when she did this. I wasn’t the party girl type. I hated being around people from school. Most of the time, I was tormented for not being like everyone else, and I wasn’t even sure what that even meant. It wasn’t like I was some grotesque circus freak with three eyes and a beard. I was just quiet. I hid beneath my layers of clothes. My long, flaming-red hair concealed my face—the face that seemed to garner attention wherever I went. And it was mostly bad, unwanted attention when it came to my classmates. When I cried myself to sleep, it was my mom’s voice in my head telling me what she’d told me a hundred times in person, “You’re just too pretty, and people didn’t know how to deal with that. Otherworldly.” That was the word she used to describe my pale, ivory skin; red hair; plump, pink lips; and big, green eyes.
I couldn’t even guess how many times I’d stared at myself in the mirror, in nothing but my underwear, wondering why people called me names. I was thin, had a decent sized chest, and my body was toned from running all the time. It was my stress reliever. Running, making my body ache—making it scream in agony at me as I pushed it to the limits with the wind in my hair—was the only way I could handle life. Why people at school tormented me to the point that I wanted to fade away into nothing was beyond me. People were just dicks.
My thoughts did nothing to improve my mood. Picking Anita up in the middle of the night after she’d hung out with my tormentors made my stomach twist into angry knots.
When I pulled into Brent Caldwell’s driveway—King Dipshit himself, head of my tormentors and jock extreme—I was already anxious to be back home in my bed. Staring up at his brightly lit house apprehensively, my heart hammered uncomfortably in my chest. I pulled in a few deep breaths, hoping to calm myself. They did nothing but remind me that I had to get my shit together, so I could walk into his place, try to remain unseen, and collect Anita without her announcing my presence or barfing on me.
When I got out of my car, I dialed Anita’s number, praying she’d answer. Knowing I was fighting a losing battle there, and sighing in resignation when she didn’t answer, I stuffed the phone back into my pocket and slunk as best I could through the crowded living room. I quickly scanned the room and didn’t see her so I made my way to the kitchen, making sure to keep my head down like a damn toddler—if I couldn’t see them then they couldn’t see me mentality in full, hopeful force.
After I’d made it through the entire downstairs and back patio, I still hadn’t found her. I turned to go back into the kitchen from the patio and crashed into a brick wall.
“Shit. Sorry,” I muttered, trying to go around whoever I’d smashed into.
“Well, look who it is!” Brent Caldwell yowled, stepping so I couldn’t go around him. “If it ain’t little Miss Perfect!”
“Excuse me, Brent,” my voice cracked beneath the restraint. He grinned down stupidly at me.
“No excuse for you,” he retorted back like the goon he was. I rolled my eyes and tried to push past him, but he moved again so I couldn’t leave.
“What are you doing here, Butt Whore?” he asked, smiling at me like he’d made the joke of the year.
“My last name is Butler. Your joke isn’t funny.” I scowled at him, knowing my words were falling on deaf ears. Being called Butt Whore was definitely something that happened more than once a week in my world.
“That wasn’t my question,” he continued, tipping his red cup to his lips and drinking, his brown eyes locked on mine.
I knew I wasn't going to get by him without answering.
“I’m here looking for Anita. I’m her ride.”
“I bet you are.” He licked his lips, his eyes darkening as they swept over me, lingering a little too long on my chest. I gave a shiver and looked away making sure to wrap my sweater even tighter around myself.
“I heard that when your nose isn’t stuck in a book, it’s stuck up a snatch.” He let out a low chuckle. “Heard you were a lesbo.” He grinned with wicked amusement.
“Get out of my face,” I snapped at him and really shoved him. His drink sloshed down the front of his dark polo as I moved passed. He sputtered an angry protest at my retreating back. I’d pay for that on Monday, but I didn’t care.
I went back to the living room and still didn’t see Anita. I glanced back to see Brent talking to Eddie and Wes, two of his football buddies. All three were looking in my direction.
Shit. I had to get out of here.
I made my way to the bathroom where I pulled my phone out and dialed Anita two more times. Still nothing.
“Fucking goddamnit,” I snarled at my phone. I typed out a text to her and hit send.
I’m leaving. Find another way home.
I pulled open the bathroom door to find myself face-to-face with Wes Mason, Brent’s friend.
“Hey there,” he smiled at me, his blue eyes sweeping over me quickly. “I was just looking for you.”
“Well, you found me,” I answered dully, wondering how in the hell I kept finding myself blocked in by these jocks. I was really going to have to start paying better attention to my surroundings.
“I did.” His lips quirked up into a bigger smile. “Brent was telling me that you’re looking for Anita. I know where she is.”
‘“You do?” I asked, suddenly interested in what he had to say.
“Yeah, she’s upstairs. Come on. I’ll take you to her.” He nodded in the direction of the stairs behind him. The voice in my head screamed at me to run in the opposite direction, but I just wanted to get Anita and get the hell out of there, so I could get back to my bed and forget this night ever happened. So, against my better judgement, I followed along as he led the way upstairs. A few people on the stairs let out soft chuckles, whispering behind their hands as I followed Wes up.
It’s not what you think! I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, but I clamped my lips shut and continued my voyage.
“She’s in there.” Wes nodded to a closed door. “Don’t knock. Just go in.”
“Are you sure?” I frowned at him and looked at the door.
“Yeah. Saw her go in about twenty minutes ago.” He looked away from me, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat. Whatever. I wanted to go home.
I pushed open the door and stepped into the dark room. I let out a yip as the door slammed closed behind me, leaving me in complete blackness.
“A-Anita?” I called out, my voice trembling. “It’s Liv. Come on. Stop playing around. Let’s go home.”
“Why are you such a stickler for the rules? Why can’t you learn to have a little fun?” Brent’s deep voice called out to me. I took a step back, unable to see past my nose in the darkened room. I felt around behind me and found the doorknob. I gave it a twist and a tug only to find it wouldn’t open.
“You should learn to loosen up,” Brent’s voice was low and husky as he spoke from the shadows, this time much closer than I was comfortable with.
I hammered on the door breathlessly even though my fists were screaming in agony.
“Someone! Open the door!” I shouted out desperately. No one would hear me. The music and chatter were far too loud for my pathetic pleas to be heard.
“Got somewhere you ne
ed to be?” Brent growled, his large hands finding my small, trembling body and turning me around so I was pressed against the door. “Study date?”
“Please. Just let me leave. I’m sorry I came—”
“Oh, baby, you didn’t come. Not yet anyway.” He pressed his body against mine, and I let out a whimper.
“Why are you afraid, Olivia?” His lips brushed against my cheek as he moved to whisper in my ear. “I won’t hurt you. I’ll make you feel good.”
“I already feel good,” I whispered back, my voice shaking just as much as my body. Why had I trusted Wes? I should have known!
“You only think you do, baby.” He chuckled softly, making shivers rush up my spine. “I know you’re afraid, but you don’t need to be. I’ll be gentle.” He softly caressed my cheek with his index finger.
What the hell had happened? One minute he was insulting me and the next he was trying to get me to. . .what? Make out with him?
I let out a yelp of surprise when I was lifted off my feet and tossed onto the bed. I scrambled across it, hoping to get out of his reach but that boy was fast. He was on me in an instant, pinning me down with his hulking body as his strong hands wrapped around my wrists, holding them down above my head.
“Listen, Olivia,” his voice was a dangerous hiss. “There are two ways out of this. You do this, or you don’t. And if you don’t, everyone is going to think you did. I’ll tell them you did. So, we might as well have some fun. See what I’m saying?”
