Death & Decluttering

“But…I only righted what my own family had set wrong.” Aurora shook her head. “I don’t deserve your kindness.”

“You didn’t deserve my accusations.” Joy stumbled forward. “You didn’t deserve the mess I made of your room, either. I’m so sorry, Aurora.”

Aurora grinned. “I was pretty mad about that mess. I think you made up for it around the time you pointed that gun at Cole.”

“Oh, no.” Joy shook her head. “I think I made up for it by spending all of last night scrubbing the entire house.”

“You…you what?!” Aurora stared at her.

“Cleaning is the most boring thing in the universe,” Joy said. “You can write me a thousand page essay on why it’s fun and show me a thousand TV shows with befores and afters, but I still won’t believe you.”

“Then why did you do it?”

“Because I felt I owed you some cleanliness, and because I realized that, if it wasn’t for the mess, you’d have gotten that letter a lot earlier and saved us all a lot of trouble. You also may have gotten to meet your father. I am so sorry about that. It won’t help much now, but I promise I’ll be more mindful about my messes from now on. I guess I have to be, now that we’ll be roommates!”

“Roommates?” Aurora stared at her open-mouthed. “Hang on. You don’t think I’d still accept your grandpa’s inheritance, do you? You were right. I never deserved it. He gave it to me because he thought he owed me a debt, but he never did.”

“Well, the way I see it, it’s legally half yours. Plus, it’s a big house. I think I’d get a bit lonely living there alone at this point,” Joy said. “I want you to stay.”

“Hmm…only if you admit something,” Aurora said.

  “What’s that?”

“Admit that cleaning the house made you feel good,” Aurora said. “Admit it made you happier.”

Joy grinned. “What can I say? I suppose, on occasion, when you put in the hard work, the end result can…spark joy!”
