"Oh, and this one? This one would stop bleeding if you mix it with a little water and place it over the open wound." She explained another one and confirmed for me that her senses are high. Those three she just mentioned could use another way in case the herbs would be mixed differently.
"So, you could use it or what?" Calen asked her confused and she squeaked excitedly. "Use it?" She almost laughed. "This is amazing. This is the best quality natural medicine you could get and I am so surprised that actually someone of her age could mix it so well and precisely." Calen was looking at her without understanding but she turned to me and a very wide smile. "Please, do as much as you could and I swear we would buy everything you have for sale." I felt extremely honored but I had to let her down a little bit. "Yeah, well I could make some extra for you but honestly I couldn’t sell you everything. People in the city are taking medicine from me and not from their doctor." I replied to her and she frowned again. I guess she was really in love with my medicine which was nothing new. I know I was good at this. Well, Maat was. 'You bet.' Maat laughed proudly.
Chapter 10
CALEN'S POV:
We just arrived at our new land and she was so cute when she tried jumping out of my car holding my hand. I couldn’t believe my mate is so damn cute.
"Thank you. By the way, it is a really nice place and I see you are really fast with the building. I am impressed." Thoth was in heaven from the praise from our mate and I could understand that since even I felt extremely happy from her praise.
I wanted to reply to something but I suddenly noticed the change in her smell. 'She is afraid.' Thoth commented on the change and I turned to her ready to ask her what happened. I liked her perfume but I still could smell the mixture of lavender and lilac which belonged to her. But now everything I could smell was the perfume. She looked startled when I looked at her so I left it be. 'It is strange.' I replied to Thoth but he also recommended leaving it. 'Don't forget she has a reason to live in the woods alone, secluded from any area close to wolves. I guess she did this to protect herself. She doesn't trust us.' He explained to me and I thought he might be right, yet it still hurt to think about the fact that our mate was afraid of us.
"Thank you for the compliment on our land and our new home," I replied to her innocently, looking back, turning my gaze back to our pack-house. 'Let's show her there is nothing to be afraid of.' I spoke to my wolf and he agreed.
I was explaining to her the reason why we built such a big packhouse and why so many extra houses around and she seemed
understandable. I was quite taken back when she asked me about 'we' which I am using and I wanted to explain to her but then I noticed her blank face.
"Wolf talk?" I asked her when the blank face disappeared and the glowing sparks were back in her mesmerizing golden eyes. I explained to her the leadership system in our pack. 'I guess it is good to show here how our pack works so she might understand that we are not dangerous and she would be more interested to stay with us.' Thoth was daydreaming. Well, I couldn’t say I didn't wish for that too but if she really was on run we would need a little bit more time to show her we are no threat.
She thanked me before I saw Zack approaching us. 'What do you think you are doing?' I mind-linked with him and saw his little grin on his face. Oh damn. Please help me, Goddess. I pleaded to our Moon Goddess.
"Good morning L..." He started. 'Don’t call her Luna you moron.' I shouted at him. "Lady." He finished and I sighed quietly. 'She doesn't know we are mates, dumbass. I think she is still below eighteen.' I informed him.
'Oh, okay sorry bro didn't know that. What are you gonna do? And why does she smell like a human?' He asked me and I was thinking maybe we could use this situation to get some small information from her. 'You could try to talk to her a little bit and we would see if she is gonna open herself a little bit. Don't ask me about her scent. I don't know myself.' I suggested and answered his question. I could again see his little smirk on his face. This guy would be my death one day. I swear.
"This is Zack, my beta." I introduced him after she greeted him, questioning the name.
"Nice to meet you, I am Rei." She replied simply. "Any family names?" He asked her back and she only shook her head. 'That's strange but no problem, leave it be, man.' I told him in our mind link.
"What brings you here today?" He asked her and a small growl escaped me. 'Man, what the hell. Sure, I brought her here. You are useless. Go back to work.' I was angry with him. I asked him to get some real info and he started like this? I shushed him off and Zack laughed in our mind link. 'Sorry man I just thought that I might little provoke you.' He said before he turned away after gesturing surrender and a slight bow.
I led Rei inside and saw that she was amazed by the decoration of the pack-house from inside. I led her to the stairs and was ready to go down but her scared and worried look made me stop. Shit, I forgot that this might look so weird. "Oh, I am sorry about that. I am sure it looks weird." I started and explained with an apology. I saw her calmed and her body relaxed from the previous tension so I turned and went down the stairs.
We were welcomed by Emily who was working here and was the mate to my gamma Andrew. She was an amazing doctor and could patch anybody. I am sure she would bring back to life even the mummy.
"Hello, Alpha." She greeted us. "Emily, this is Rei. Rei, this is Emily, our pack doctor." I introduced them and saw a skeptical look. 'She is human. Why did you bring humans?' She asked me in our link. 'Long story but trust me she is not human. Smell her again. She is the wolf I told you about that lives in the woods west of us.' I answered her and she gave a sound of understanding back.
Emily wasn't really excited or anything and seemed that she is not very enthusiastic to help me but once she took the first sachet with the herbs and medicine Rei brought her mood changed completely. Suddenly she was so hurried to check the other sachets.
Emily was now in heaven from the medicine my little mate brought to show. I didn't understand her excitement since I am not working with those but based on the sparks in her eyes, they must be really good. My mate was looking at her with sad eyes since she told her that she couldn’t provide only for us and I think it is actually considerable. 'Our mate is absolutely amazing; she would be perfect Luna.' Thoth purred happily and I could definitely understand. Not only was she smart and beautiful but also caring which are very good
characteristics for Luna and I could not be luckier and prouder.
"It is not a big deal. I think you might show us which herbs you are collecting and the process you use for mixing but this is pretty precise and good work. I would like to learn from you." Emily asked and seemed that Rei was feeling excited about that too. I guess she was really looking forward to spending time with another wolf.
I didn't tell Emily that Rei is my mate. For now, I guess fewer people know better for her protection. First, we need to gain her trust and by her face, I guess we are in a good way. Emily was actually useful now I know she is really below eighteen so I have time before her birthday to show we could protect her.
"When is your birthday?" I asked Rei and she smiled at me. "In December." She replied and I counted that this gives me around like seven months to get her trust. 'Pretty enough time.' Thoth commented and I agreed with him.
"Oh, nice. Alright, I guess it is time to take you back. I would not like to make Madam Rosie angry about stealing you for too long." I told her and she smiled at me happily. "Thank you. That would be great." She replied to me back. Honestly, I did not want to let her go so early but if I want to make her trust me I sure I couldn’t push at her. 'You could stall her a little bit more' my wolf suggested but I didn't agree. I brought her here with the excuse to show the medicine to our pack doctor which actually ended up much better than I could imagine but I should not extend those borders.
I led her back up. "I am sorry about the question in the car." I tried to start another conversation between us since the one I killed
previou
sly.
"It is alright. It just brought some not pleasant memories." She told me and I could understand her. 'Maybe try to open to her first.' Thoth suggested. It might not be a bad idea.
"I think I know your pain. I lost my parents when I was eleven. We were attacked and I survived only thanks to my poppa pack that came to save us. If his pack would be a bit farther than it was I would not be here either." I told her and she looked at me with watery eyes. Damn, I did not want to make her cry. "I am sorry, I didn't mean to make you cry," I told her and she shook the head. "I am sorry for your loss. I understand this pain. I was not that lucky to have a grandparent who could come to help." She said and it took me a little bit of time to realize what she meant. 'She lost her whole pack.' Thoth spoke my thoughts but I was afraid to say that myself. "You are the only survivor?" I asked her back and she nodded.
We were already out back beside the car and I opened the door for her. She literally climbed up. Note to me: Get a lower car. But I swear to Goddess she is so cute. I did not know I like short girls until I met this one.
I closed the door after her and ran to the driver's side. "I am sorry for your loss too," I told her once I closed the door and started to engine. She gave me a painful look with a sad smile. "May I know how long you have been alone here?" I tried to ask her again about her past.
"Six years." She told me. That's a pretty long time. It means she lost her pack when she was just eleven years old. I felt sorry and sad for her. I couldn’t imagine living alone for six years. 'How the heck she managed to survive in these woods for so many years all alone. She got her wolf just a year ago.' I complained to Thoth.
'She has had her wolf since she was eight.' Thoth said like it is nothing special.
'What? How do you even know that?' I was shocked. First how she could have her wolf from such a young age and second, how the hell did he even get that information?
'I spoke to Maat.' He answered me and I assumed Maat would be her wolf. 'And I told her our mates are special. Maat taught her everything she knew and that little human beside you is an extremely smart and quick learner.' He praised our mate like they are two separate individuals. I assume he might be kind of right about that. We are individuals sharing the same mind and the same body.
"That's a pretty long time," I replied to her during my conversation with my wolf trying to keep my thoughts for myself.
"I am sorry; could we please change the topic?" She asked me politely and I did not want to make her sad or remind her more memories from her past so I smiled and nodded to her.
It was nice to have a little chit chat with her. She was pretty talkative when I started to ask about the woods. She gave me really nice advice about the hunting area. She sent me to places with an amazing view. I could say she knows every single corner in this area. Some areas sounded easy to enter and I immediately sent my warriors to check the place and secure it. Others sounded like natural borders hard to cross. Thanks to her information I got a better view of this area than I got from my scouts.
Sadly, soon we arrived back to madam Rosie and I had to give her back. It was almost noon which means I had for almost two whole hours. As a start, it is not bad. 'We have plenty of time, relax man.' Thoth commented and he was right. No time to rush.
Chapter 11
CALEN’S POV:
I dropped Rei back at madam Rosewoods shop and headed back to our pack land. I couldn’t say it was easy to let her there, especially after I found out that she was living alone for six years and her whole pack was destroyed. Only three packs were annihilated that year. The only thing those packs had in common was the ‘silver’ in their name and seeing Rei’s silver hair the other night I am sure it was because of her. I don’t know what is so different and special about my mate but whatever it is, it was the reason for someone to completely destroy three packs.
‘Do you know something about a silver-haired wolf with the golden eyes from history?’ I asked my wolf but at the same time connected with elders. I was sure they might know something.
‘Why do you ask?’ Hannah asked me back. She was the sister of my later father and is currently one of our five elders. I liked her a lot, after my parents' death she tried to be a mother for me and I have to say she did a damn good job to raise me as I am now together with my poppa.
‘It’s about that woman I informed you last time. She has silver hair and golden eyes.’ I spoke back and could hear my aunt’s murmuring as she was thinking for herself in our mind link.
‘You should have kicked her out son.’ Ismail commented. He was the moody one and always dissatisfied with whatever was happening around us. Ismail changed after the death of my poppa. He was his gamma and father of Andrew but after my parents and then my poppa’s death he became much more closed and a downer on top of that.
‘Don’t forget that she was here a long time before we even came. We would not be any better than others if we just took the land from someone else.’ I tried to argue back but since she was alone and we were packed I knew that Ismail would not accept that as a reason nor argument. Anyway, I didn’t care.
‘She is just a dirty rogue and you are putting her above the whole pack.’ He told me back which made me angry. ‘She is seventeen. She spent in those woods six years after her whole pack was annihilated. I am asking you about the silver-haired wolf for a very good reason. Whoever killed those wolves and destroyed those packs was looking for her. So, I am asking again. Do any of you know something about the wolf with the waist-long silver hair, golden eyes, with the ability masking her own scent?’ I put my Alpha tone into my question so Ismail would understand that I am not in the mood to argue or dig the answers from them.
I felt already nervous enough that I am back in our pack land and my own mate is in the city. I already appointed some of my warriors to keep track of her and support her in case anything happened like someone would try to attack her which I knew is a very slight chance given the fact that hundreds of kilometers around is no pack but one never knows when some other rogues might get lost. I am not ready to risk the life of my own mate. ‘Then you should be protecting here.’ Thoth replied to my own thoughts reading my mood but even he understood that it is not that easy.
It was Leona who brought a little light into this. ‘Are you sure she is a wolf? From what you are describing it sounds more like she is a witch. That would explain her long silver hair, golden eyes, and even the ability to alter her scent.’ Leona explained. This option I didn’t think about. Maybe she is a witch and only pretending to be a wolf. ‘Does she have any other specialties you noticed?’ She asked me.
‘She is very good with the herbs. Even Emily was completely in heaven from the medicine she brought to her. Emily confirmed that her skills with that are really extremely high.’ I talked back and Leona only shrugged more convinced that actually, my little mate is a witch.
‘So, I guess that’s it. She might be a witch.’ She told me but then I realized she confirmed by herself that her pack was destroyed and my wolf already spoke to her.
‘She couldn’t be a witch.’ I started back and already could see Ismail rolled his eyes before I could even hear his tone. Today I was really not in the mood to argue with him at all.
‘And why are you so sure?’ He asked me. I was not really sure if I should tell them but I could always use my Alpha tone to make them keep it secret.
‘My wolf already spoke to her wolf plus as I said before she was part of one of those three destroyed packs.’ I simply answered him.
‘As a witch, she has a connection to a spirit world from where we have our wolves so she could easily talk with him instead of her wolf as you say and same with the pack. She might know about them and just use them as cover for herself.’ Ismail argued back and sadly others murmured considering his version.
‘She is not a liar and she is not a witch.’ I said with power in my voice.
‘So, could you please explain to us why you are so sure about that?’ Ismail reacted almo
st instantly. I swear one day I would kill that person myself.
‘She is my mate.’ I said and just heard several ‘oh’ in our mind link. They were silent.
‘Except Zack and Andrew, no one else knows I found my mate and you are not allowed to talk about it. Am I clear?’ I asked with my full Alpha tone and they confirmed unison.
‘I know there is a chance to get another species as a mate but it is very rare plus as I said. My wolf already talked to hers.’ I added and they were still silent. ‘So be useful and get me some information about those three packs that were destroyed. I want to know their history and connections. I know they had in their names ‘silver’ and she has silver hair so there must be connections. I want to know every single thing you could find.’ I told them and my anxiety was rising up.
I severed the connection to them and was left alone in my own head, well if I don’t count my wolf. I felt that Hannah was trying to connect with me again so I opened the link for her.
‘Yes, auntie?’ I asked her and could feel her emotions through our link. ‘I am so happy for you that you finally found your mate. I am sure she would be amazing. You deserve the best my boy.’ She told me and I could really feel the love she felt for me. She was the best. ‘How is she?’ She asked curiously. At least one of those five was really happy for me.
