‘Speech time,’ Clementine agreed, ‘my wily eagle.’
Hand in hand, they joined Octavia in the foyer. Clementine squeezed Benedick’s fingers then let go so she could stand beside Octavia and open their art show.
And it made Clementine feel both weightless and secure to know everything she’d said to Benedick was true. She no longer had to be strong all alone; to demand wingspan in the world, all on her own; to find the strength to get up and keep fighting when it hurt, alone.
Perhaps she didn’t technically need Benedick for any of that, but she needed him in her life. He gave her balance, just as she gave balance to him. They were both flightless, but they gave each other wingspan.
Together they were grounded: stable, strong, connected to the earth and sky, and to each other.
