Historical Note
Who was the real Lady Mary Contrary? As with most nursery rhymes, there is usually more than one interpretation. Most historians speculate between Mary I, Mary Queen of Scots, and Mary, the mother of Jesus. The symbolism behind the rhyme is often construed as dark, or even bloody, but I chose to offer a lighter rendition.
Another piece of history woven into this tale is Banbury Castel. It originally had two defense ditches (moats), one around the castle keep and one around the castle’s defensive wall. It was brought to its knees during the English Civil War and rendered unlivable. This story is set as if the earl’s family purchased Banbury Castle and restored it from a medieval fortification to a more modern, late eighteenth century/early nineteenth century structure (without the double moats and leaving a remnant of the wall around the surrounding land). Today it is nothing more than history and a mark on Castle Street, but its stones were used to build up the town around it, which is special in its own way.
