Many Dutch people believe rumors that their country is about to be liberated. Dutch patriots celebrate Dolle Dinsdag, or Mad Tuesday, and many collaborators move to Germany to escape repercussions.

The Allies push back the German occupation, freeing the first Dutch cities.
September 17–25, 1944
Operation Market Garden, a bold Allied surprise attack at the border of the Netherlands and Germany, attempts to hasten the end of the war but fails.
September 1944
Thousands of Dutch train workers go on strike to hinder German troop movements. Angered by the strike, the Nazis cut off food and fuel to the occupied Netherlands.
September 1944–May 5, 1945
Thousands of Dutch civilians starve or freeze to death during what they call the Hongerwinter.
May 5, 1945
The Netherlands is liberated from German occupation.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
RAISED IN THE SUBURBS of Detroit, Rob Currie majored in psychology at Cornerstone University before earning his master’s and doctorate degrees in psychology at Saint Louis University. He met and married his wife in Saint Louis.
An avid reader, Rob’s favorite books are about World War II. His veteran father cultivated this interest by frequently sharing stories of bravery and ingenuity which contributed to the Allied victory. Other interests include cooking, playing basketball, and writing whimsical poetry.
Rob has taught psychology at Judson University since 1987. In 2001 he published Hungry for More of God. He published Preschool Wisdom: What Preschoolers Desperately Want to Tell Parents and Grandparents in 2011.
