The Executive Transition Playbook

Thank you to my sister, Jessica Payne, for providing me the Los Angeles book retreats to write the manuscript as well as the much-needed dinner breaks. Thanks also to the many leaders who have used these concepts to create their individualized Executive Transition Playbooks as they entered new jobs. Each leader sheds new learnings and reminds me of the importance of a well-defined set of goals, strategies, and plans that guides all great leaders. Your passion to make a difference to the companies and people you serve is inspiring!

In writing this book, I drew on the wisdom of countless leaders I have met over my decades in business. Many of them were willing to share their stories and even to work with the materials. I thank each and every one of you.

My deepest thanks to my colleagues and friends who read early drafts and offered sage advice. I am particularly grateful to Todd Lachman, Kristen Clendaniel Clark, Derrick Samuel, Linda Van

Valkenburgh, Bill Brimmer, Pam Magoon, Geoffrey Akiki, Orville Aarons, and Catherine Carlisi — for their reviews and thoughtful feedback, including their personal stories, terrific suggestions, and ideas that came out in our discussions. My gratitude goes to Robert Maher for brainstorming scenarios, working through the exercises, and reminding me on a regular basis to stay the course. Each of you truly enhanced the content. I hope you will recognize your contributions throughout the book.

And many thanks to my accountability partners, who are extraordinary executive coaches and authors: Jasbindar Singh and Stuart Elliott. Our weekly calls gave me the “mojo” to keep writing, from the first draft to the final version. Thanks for encouraging me to have the confidence to bring my authentic voice and holistic view to this important leadership topic.

I am profoundly grateful to my editor, Deirdre Silberstein of Silberstein & Associates, for her strategic insights and superb editing, for her guidance on how to lay out the book, and for her energy and enthusiasm as she pored over every draft to help me bring the contents to life. Thank you to Lynn Amos, of Fyne Lyne Ventures, who created a simple, elegant cover and a layout of the book that make it easy for readers to use the information. I truly appreciate the efforts of Patricia Bayer and Mark Woodworth in editing the manuscript, and of Patti Danos, whose energy and passion helped me find the right words, whether for the title or cover copy.

A special thanks also goes to Christy Tryhus, of Mission Marketing Mentors, who was indispensable with advice and coaching as I navigated through the writing process.

This book is dedicated to my mother, Judy Potts, and my late father, Daniel Potts, who always inspired me and encouraged me to dream big. I am eternally grateful for their guidance, for knowing when to show me the way, and for sensing when I needed the freedom to find it on my own.

I hope this book inspires you, my readers, to take steps to lead your transitions into new roles with energy and excellence, and with a passion to make the business better than when you took on your new role. By choosing this book, you have demonstrated courage to practice new leadership approaches and to serve the organizations that promoted you into the role. May you find the path to serve at your best!
