Removing my Vans, I place them in the closet and head upstairs to the bedroom. When I open the door, I glance around, and the bed is neatly clean, and a lot of my perfume bottles are still on the dresser. I head to the walk-in closet and most of my clothes are still in the same place, even the night gown Marla bought me is still there. I go back into the bedroom and inhale the heavy dose of his expensive cologne and bourbon. It smells like home. I head to the kitchen, pour myself a glass of water and down it. I whip out my phone from my pocket and tap the envelope button to see where he’s at and the front door opens.
A woman laughs, fills the manor and my heartbeat in anticipation. Has he moved on? Has he forgotten about me? My nightmare is becoming true. I feel sick to my stomach. I rush towards the foyer. Making sure my mind isn’t playing tricks on me. Devious is with some woman and she looks twice his age, but she’s still pretty. Her blonde hair cascaded down her back and she’s wearing a black suit. She pats him on the shoulder.
“So, when do you want me to start?” she says.
“As soon as possi—”
I clear my throat and they both turn to look at me. I glare at the woman and she does a double take. Devious stares at me with a surprise expression.
“Is this your wife?” she eyes me up and down. “She’s so beautiful.” She walks up to me, holding out her hand and hesitantly I shake it. I glance down at his hand; he’s still wearing his wedding band.
“Who are you?” I ask.
“I’m in charge of the staff on Devious’s properties.”
“Leave, Laruen.” Devious tone is deep and I miss hearing it. He stalks up to me, grabbing me by the hand, ushering me into the living room. “What are you doing here?” He removes a few strands of my hair out of my face, then he uses his thumb to cup my chin. His touch makes me melt.
“I wanted to see you again. I don’t want a divorce Devious. I thought about it a lot while I was overseas. I never missed anyone like I miss you,” I tell him. “Please let’s talk about it at least.”
“Okay.” He strokes my cheeks and I follow him into our bedroom. This probably is not the best place for us to speak because we might end up ripping each other clothes off.
He removes his tie, but there is tension in his shoulders, then he unbuttons his dress shirt, setting it on the lounge chair. He sits on the bed next to me.
“Talk,” he orders.
“Devious, can we pretend we didn’t break up for the last two months? I want to be with you. Do you still love me?”
He studies my face like a map and doesn’t respond for several moments. “I do, but I want you to be with me because you want to not because I forced you to,” he states, his eyes widen, and I fiddle with his wedding band.
“Why didn’t you sign the divorce papers?” I ask.
“I was hoping you would come back to me. I was hoping you would choose me. I didn’t want to keep forcing you into something you don’t want. You talked about your freedom a lot and I wanted to give you a choice to choose me. Our relationship has always been based on you comprising and me not giving you anything.”
“Would you have waited for me?”
He nods. “I would have waited but I would have slept with other women but not married them. You’re the only woman who deserves to be my wife.”
Tears well in my eyes and they fall down my cheeks.
“Why are you crying?”
“Honestly, I don’t know.” I rest my head on his chest. He kisses my forehead then my lips. Oh God, I missed his lips and desire blossoms in my stomach.
“Are we officially back together?” I ask.
He nods and yanks my shirt over my head, staring at my breasts. “I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my life with anyone else.” He kisses my forehead. “I love you, Roselyn.”
“I love you, too.”
Then we make love until the sun comes up the next morning.
