“All done,” he announced with a giant smile. “Come here, love. Tell me what you think.”
I stretched like a cat as soon as I was off the stool and circled around the easel to take a look. The paintings Landon did—especially the ones of me—continued to take my breath away.
This time, however, I was more annoyed than anything else. The painting was flawless and intricately done. Even the view out the window behind me was detailed to perfection.
I put a hand on my forehead and sighed.
“Damn it, Landon.”
“You don’t like it?”
“I love it—which probably means you love it, too.”
“I do,” he confirmed with a nod.
After a moment, he frowned and pursed his lips before saying the words I knew were coming but dreaded nonetheless.
“I can’t give this to your father.”
I threw my hands up and prayed for the patience to deal with this man.
“But.... I suppose I can keep this version for myself and make an identical copy for your father. I can’t keep making you pose for me.” He placed a hand on my swollen stomach and smiled. “Especially since you won’t be in this state for very much longer.”
“Thank fuck. I feel disgusting.”
“You’re beautiful—even more so than when we first met. You’re positively radiant like this.”
I wanted to disagree, but I bit my tongue. Landon always saw me differently than I saw myself. But I didn’t know how it was possible for an eight-month pregnant woman to feel anything other than bloated and unattractive.
Landon took my hand and brushed my rings with his thumb, smiling up at me tenderly. I glanced back to the portrait, smiling when I noticed the sparkling diamond and plain matching band were painted in. A sign that I was taken—that I was his.
“I think Dad would love this. Mom, too.”
“Yeah? I suppose… I suppose I could give them this one. I’ll make a copy for myself or take a photo of it. It’d look lovely in a frame.” Landon nodded to himself and grinned. “It took a few months of marriage, but I do believe I’ve learned the art of compromise.”
“I do believe that as well. Way to go,” I teased, chuckling when he pulled me against his side. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
I looked down at him and shook my head. There were so many things I was thankful for, I didn’t even know where to begin.
“For letting me be your muse.”
He intertwined our fingers and whispered, “My one and only, ‘til death do us part.”
“Or until I get sick of you.”
He grinned. “Or that, yes.”
Like that could ever happen.
