“Yeah.” She smiles. “We should definitely do that.” Collins reaches into the back seat and produces a small gift bag with graduation caps on it. “I know it’s not technically a graduation, but I thought it fit.”
“It fits. I love it.”
“How do you know?” She laughs. “You haven’t even opened it yet.”
“Because it’s from you.”
“Open it, Grady.”
I nod, reaching into the bag. I pull out what feels like a picture frame. Carefully, I remove the tissue paper and my eyes rake over the frame. “My daddy MD,” I read the heading aloud. I read the passage, and then I realize the picture is not just any picture, it’s an ultrasound image. “Collins?”
“You’re going to be a daddy.” She’s smiling through her tears.
Immediately, I unbuckle my seat belt and climb out of the SUV. I’m at her door, just as she removes hers, and I pull her into my arms. Stepping away from the door, I spin her around. When we stop spinning, her legs are dangling in the air, and tears have coated our cheeks. “We’re having a baby?”
“We are.”
Dropping to my knees, I kiss her still flat belly. I don’t bother to try and hide the quiver in my voice when I whisper, “I love you little one.” I rest my forehead against where our child is growing inside of her. I’ve never met this little peanut, just found out of his or her existence today, yet the love I have for our baby is astounding. Standing back up, I kiss her long and hard. “I love you, baby momma,” I say, breaking the kiss. She throws her head back with laughter. No matter how many times I think things can’t be better, that there is no way that I could be happier in the life I share with her, she proves me wrong. I’m looking forward to a lifetime of surprises, love, and laughter with her and our little peanut, and any future peanuts we are lucky enough to have.
“I love you, too, Dr. Carmichael.”
