“You have a woman?”
“Nope. Been kinda on a dry spell. Been working months at a time. No time for love, but I see you’ve been busy.”
If you only knew…
“Are you staying?”
“No, I’ve gotta get back. The guys are covering for me, but I have to check back in tomorrow.”
My heart feels heavy, almost like it’s going in slow motion.
“Back sometime soon?”
“I hope so.”
He’s said that to me before. And then someone showed on my doorstep with a letter explaining he was gone.
But he’s here.
“My wife is ex-military.”
“I know.”
“And she’s from NYC.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“Is there anything you don’t know?”
Landon laughs. “Are you happy?”
“I used to want to be you, now I want to be me. And you should want to be me.”
He smiles. “I do envy you. I’ll be back. I prom—”
“Don’t. I can’t have you say it and it not come true. Can you meet Sasha?”
“I don’t think I should. You don’t have to lie to her that you saw me, but no one else can know.” He backs into the hallway. “Later, Lennox…”
“Later, Landon…”
And just like that he’s gone. Do I truly think I’ll see him again? No. But if I do, I’ll cherish that time like I have these last five minutes.
I press the button for coffee. I walk back into the room.
Sasha’s awake and nursing…Lucas?
“Logan,” she says.
“Damn.”
Sasha smiles. “You’ll catch on soon enough.”
“My brother was here.”
Sasha stills. “Yeah, baby, I can feel him, too.”
“No…he’s not dead.”
She shakes her head. “What?”
“Turns out he’s alive. Apparently, the Red Star Rebel Squad is a ghost squad now.”
“You’re serious?”
“Yeah, he talked to me for five minutes and then he was gone again. Like the wind, I guess.”
“I’m so happy for you.”
“He came in here and saw the babies and you while you were sleeping.”
“Okay, slightly creepy, but I can handle it.” She lifts Logan to burp him. “You know what else I can handle?”
“What’s that?” I kiss her forehead.
“A ride on your bike.”
She’d been in therapy for the last three months, babies coming two weeks early, which was actually really good for twins. Blade was thrilled and called her his perfect patient. Little did he know what I had to do to get Miss Bensley—now Mrs. Wright—to be perfect and it involved a lot of personal attention, but I loved every minute of it. Her therapy helped her to see what war was in her life—a moment in time that shaped and led her to be who she is. And now this.
“I can’t wait, Sash.”
“I love you, my unicrow.”
“I love you, my star, burning bright.”
She’s mine and life is bright, too.
