  Author’s Note

There are many historical events and people included in One Night of Scandal. The Spa Field riots occurred in late 1816, and the attack on the Prince Regent’s coach happened on the day Parliament opened in January 1817. Due to the atmosphere of agitation, Parliament formed a Committee of Secrecy, habeas corpus was suspended, and the Seditious Meetings Act of 1817 was passed.

William Cobbett published a newspaper for the working class and spent two years in prison after being convicted of libel. To avoid being arrested again, he fled to America in 1817.

Sir Francis Burdett was a member of Parliament who fought for reform and, in the eyes of many, a radical. He would have been somewhat of a hero to Jack.

Stafford was the clerk at Bow Street, and he also worked for the Home Office, where he organized informers such as John Castle. Castle had been arrested for forgery and ended up giving evidence against his friend and partner, who was executed for the crime. Later on, he joined the Spencean Philanthropists, and a Bow Street officer who knew of his criminal background told Stafford, who was the clerk at Bow Street. Stafford “recruited” Castle as a spy—I use quotes because he used Castle’s past unlawful activity to persuade him. Castle informed on the Spenceans’ activities and went on to testify in court against James Watson in his trial for his role in the Spa Fields riots. Castle was not a good witness, however, and once again, his criminal past was used against him, this time to show he wasn’t credible. Watson was not convicted, and the other three men were released before they were tried.

It was a tumultuous political time with agent provocateurs at work!

A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, their two hilarious kids who seem to have inherited the writing gene. They’re a crazy cat family with two Bengal cats, a small, fame-seeking cat named after a fruit, and an older rescue Maine Coon who is the master of chill and five a.m. serenading. In her “spare” time Darcy is a serial volunteer enrolled in a 12-step program where one learns to say “no,” but she keeps having to start over. Her happy places are Disneyland and Labor Day weekend at the Gorge.
