“Wow. What a glorious future you’ve figured out for us. I’ve always been a short-term kind of guy, never planning beyond tomorrow. But with you, it’s different, Chelle. You make me want more than that.”
“And we can have it, Allon. We can have whatever we want,” she said brightly.
“Well, I want you. Can I have that?”
Chelle gave him a wicked smile. “As much as you can handle.”
She leaned over to kiss him just as something thudded to the ground just a few feet away. They both rolled over and stared at the item in shock, slow to realize what it was.
A gift basket. A real, bonafide gift basket complete with fruit, cookies, a can of whipped cream, several crullers, and two rolls of money.
“What the actual hell is that?” Allon spluttered.
“Look!” Chelle gasped, pointing up to the sky.
There, weaving in and out of the clouds, was a familiar dragon, his wings beating slowly and rhythmically as he crossed the sky above them toward the darkening sunset.
“The goddamn Gunslinger,” Allon murmured, clearly impressed.
“I probably should be creeped out,” Chelle said as she punched through the cellophane on the basket and dug around in it. “But right now all I really want to do is put the whipped cream to good use.”
Pulling her hand from the basket, she showed him the true object of her desire.
“After a cruller, of course.”
